Compact High Velocity Clouds

چکیده
We summarize the observed properties of the CHVC population, which provide strong evidence for source distances in the range 200– 1000 kpc. At these distances, the population corresponds to strongly dark-matter dominated sub-dwarf galaxies still accreting onto the more massive Local Group systems. Recent searches for faint associated stellar populations have revealed red-giant candidates for which follow-up spectroscopy is scheduled. A sensitive H i survey for CHVC counterparts in the NGC 628 galaxy group has allowed tentative detection of 40 candidates, for which confirming observations have been approved. Many open issues should be resolved by observational programs within the coming years.

Neutral Hydrogen and the Missing Satellites of the Local Group
We present a comparison of the leftover satellites at z=0 in a cold dark matter dominated simulation of the formation of the Local Group to the distribution of observed neutral hydrogen high-velocity clouds and compact high-velocity clouds. The ∼2000 leftover satellites in the simulation have dark matter masses which range between 0.5 to 10 × 10 9 M ⊙ , sizes between 3 to 30 kpc, and distances ...
متن کاملThe Kinematic and Spatial Deployment of Compact, Isolated High-Velocity Clouds
We have identified a class of high–velocity clouds which are compact and apparently isolated. The clouds are compact in that they have angular sizes less than 2 degrees FWHM. They are isolated in that they are separated from neighboring emission by expanses where no emission is seen to the detection limit of the available data. Candidates for inclusion in this class were extracted from the Leid...
متن کاملMorphological Characteristics of Compact High–velocity Clouds Revealed by High–resolution Wsrt Imaging
A class of compact, isolated high–velocity clouds which plausibly represents a homogeneous subsample of the HVC phenomenon in a single physical state was objectively identified by Braun and Burton (1999). Six examples of the CHVCs, unresolved in single–dish data, have been imaged with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The high– resolution imaging reveals the morphology of these objects,...
متن کاملPhysical properties of two compact high-velocity clouds possibly associated with the Leading Arm of the Magellanic System
Aims. We observed two compact high-velocity clouds HVC 291+26+195 and HVC 297+09+253 to analyse their structure, dynamics, and physical parameters. In both cases there is evidence for an association with the Leading Arm of the Magellanic Clouds. The goal of our study is to learn more about the origin of the two CHVCs and to use them as probes for the structure and evolution of the Leading Arm. ...
متن کاملWhere Are the High-velocity Clouds in Local Group Analogs?
High-velocity clouds (HVCs) are clouds of H i seen around the Milky Way with velocities inconsistent with Galactic rotation; they have unknown distances and masses and controversial origins. One possibility is that HVCs are associated with the small dark matter halos seen in models of galaxy formation and distributed at distances of 150 kpc to 1 Mpc. We report on our attempts to detect the anal...
متن کاملStarbursts from strong compression of galactic molecular clouds due to the high pressure of the intracluster medium
We demonstrate that the high pressure of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) can trigger the collapse of molecular clouds in a spiral galaxy, leading to a burst of star formation in the clouds. Our hydrodynamical simulations show that the high gaseous (ram pressure and static thermal) pressure of the ICM strongly compresses a self-gravitating gas cloud within a short time scale (∼ 10 yr), dramati...
