I will des ribe the basi ideas from Bana h spa e theory that allow one to fruitfully apply notions from smooth analysis in spa es whi h do not admit smooth renorms (or \bumps") and so to perform Partially Smooth Variational Analysis. I shall also mention some open fun tional analyti questions relating to best approximation, vis osity and variational analysis. This is joint work with Jay Treiman and Jim Zhu and also involves Limits of Partial Vis osity Subderivatives; and Other Appli ations of Partially Smooth Variational Prin iples. 2
