Predicting Election Outcomes from Positive and Negative Trait Assessments of Candidate Imagespops_745

چکیده
Conventional wisdom, and a growing body of behavioral research, suggests that the nonverbal image of a candidate influences voter decision making. We presented subjects with images of political candidates and asked them to make four trait judgments based solely on viewing the photographs. Subjects were asked which of the two faces exhibited more competence, attractiveness, deceitfulness, and threat, which are arguably four of the most salient attributes that can be conveyed by faces. When we compared our subjects’ choices to the actual election outcomes, we found that the candidates chosen as more likely to physically threaten the subjects actually lost 65% of the real elections. As expected, our findings support the conclusions of Todorov, Mandisodza, Goren, and Hall (2005) by showing a positive correlation between the competence judgments and the real election Political Psychology, Vol. 31, No. 1, 2010 doi: 10.1111/j.1467-9221.2009.00745.x

Cultural effects on the association between election outcomes and face-based trait inferences
How competent a politician looks, as assessed in the laboratory, is correlated with whether the politician wins in real elections. This finding has led many to investigate whether the association between candidate appearances and election outcomes transcends cultures. However, these studies have largely focused on European countries and Caucasian candidates. To the best of our knowledge, there ...
متن کاملCandidate preferences and expectations of election outcomes.
Analysis of data from the American Life Panel shows that in the presidential election of 2008 and in multiple statewide elections in 2010, citizens exhibited large differences in their expectations of election outcomes. Expectations were strongly positively associated with candidate preferences, persons tending to believe that their preferred candidate is more likely to win the election. Commit...
متن کاملAccuracy of Amniotic Fluid Index and Single Deepest Pocket Measurements in Predicting the Outcomes of Prolonged Pregnancies
Introduction: Two techniques for sonographic evaluation of amniotic fluid are Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) and Single Deepest Pocket (SDP). In this study,we aimed to determine the accuracy of AFI and SDP in predicting prolonged pregnancy outcomes. Methods: In this prospective, double-blinded, cohort study, 362 women with more than 40 weeks of gestational age were evaluated. Both AFI and SDP meth...
متن کاملPolling the face: prediction and consensus across cultures.
Previous work has shown that individuals agree across cultures on the traits that they infer from faces. Previous work has also shown that inferences from faces can be predictive of important outcomes within cultures. The current research merges these two lines of work. In a series of cross-cultural studies, the authors asked American and Japanese participants to provide naïve inferences of tra...
