The Intelligent Classroom: Beyond Four Walls

چکیده
It has become standard practice to use the traditional information technologies such as web and email in education. But as the University campus becomes increasingly deployed with interconnected computing technology, we begin to ask how the resulting “iCampus” resource can be used in new and novel ways. This paper builds upon our previous work in the area of intelligent environments and goes beyond the typical use of computing technology within education. We report on our current research that aims to apply mixed reality and ubiquitous computing paradigms to enrich the teaching and learning experience and describe our deployments and innovations across the University of Essex

Beyond Four Walls: Towards Large-Scale Intelligent Environments
As Intelligent Environments research continues in its various guises, there is an increase in the scale at which investigation is being conducted. Projects are looking beyond single-room and apartment sized living-labs that have provided us with initial testbeds for early research and are envisioning grander designs on the scale of entire buildings, campus or towns. But now we must ask if the k...
متن کاملBeyond next Slide, Please": the Use of Content and Speech in Multi-modal Control
The Intelligent Classroom is an automated lecture facility where one of the primary goals is that speakers be able to control it by interacting with it as they would with a human A/V technician. In this paper we describe our research in imbedding Microsoft Powerpoint into the Intelligent Classroom. In particular we discuss how we use two modes of sensing (Computer Vision and Speech Recognition)...
متن کاملIranian EFL Learners’ Autonomous Behavior in Out-of-class Contexts: A Call for Understanding Learners’ Personalized Approaches to Learning
The salient, and often ignored, role that out-of-class learning plays in second/foreign language (L2) learners’ development is overshadowed by classroom research. The main aim of this study is to problematize the role of out-of-class learning in the specific English-as-Foreign-Language (EFL) context of Iran by examination of the ways in which four learners attempted to revamp their English lang...
متن کاملCooperating with people: the Intelligent
People frequently complain that it is too difficult to figure out how to get computers to do what they want. However, with a computer system that actually tries to understand what its users are doing, people can interact in ways that are more natural to them. We have been developing a system, the Intelligent Classroom, that does exactly this. The Intelligent Classroom uses cameras and microphon...
متن کاملSensors Model Student Self Concept in the Classroom
In this paper we explore findings from three experiments that use minimally invasive sensors with a web based geometry tutor to create a user model. Minimally invasive sensor technology is mature enough to equip classrooms of up to 25 students with four sensors at the same time while using a computer based intelligent tutoring system. The sensors, which are on each student’s chair, mouse, monit...
