Economic and Spatial Determinants of Interregional Migration in Kazakhstan

چکیده
Economic and Spatial Determinants of Interregional Migration in Kazakhstan In this paper we analyze economic and spatial determinants of interregional migration in Kazakhstan using quarterly panel data on region to region migration in 2008-2010. In line with traditional economic theory we find that migration is determined by economic factors, first of all income: People are more likely to leave regions where incomes are low and more likely to move to regions with a higher income level. As predicted by gravity arguments, mobility is larger between more populated regions. Furthermore, distance has a strong negative impact on migration, indicating high migration related costs and risks. Assuming that high migration costs are caused by poor infrastructure, investments in public and social infrastructure should facilitate regional income convergence in Kazakhstan and improve living standards in depressed regions. Despite the growing importance of interregional migration at the local level in rapidly aging society, past literature overlooked the relationship between these two demographic phenomena. To better understand the determinants of interregional migration and its implications for population aging, this study estimated fixed-effects models derived from the gravity model of migration using populatio...

Seeking the determinants of the lay-off process that takes place at the onset of Indonesian economic crisis in Java island, this study robustly shows that the lay-off rate, i.e., the ratio of number of lay-offs to the size of the labor force, is negatively related to the economic growth rate and share of labor in informal sector; and is positively related to the unemployment rate at the distric...
متن کاملDescribing and Projecting the Age and Spatial Structures of Interregional Migration in Italy
In this paper, we first set out a method for describing the age and spatial structures of interregional migration in Italy over time using the parameters of a saturated log-linear model. Second, we use this information and the log-linear model to project these structures forward based on a set of assumptions about the overall, main effect, and interaction parameters. These two sections of the p...
