چکیده

by MUSHTAQUE AHMAD, M.S. Washington State University December 2008 Chair: Richard J. Watts Oxidant interaction with subsurface materials is a major factor influencing the effective application of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) for contaminant destruction. The newest and least explored ISCO oxidant source is persulfate. Persulfate interaction with subsurface minerals was investigated as a basis for understanding persulfate activation in the subsurface. The mineral-mediated decomposition of persulfate and generation of oxidants and reductants was investigated with four iron and manganese oxides and two clay minerals at both low pH (<7) and high pH (>12). At both low and high pH, persulfate decomposition was minimal in the presence of all six minerals. The manganese oxide birnessite was the most effective catalyst for degrading the hydroxyl radical probe nitrobenzene, indicating hydroxyl radical generation at both low and high pH regimes. The iron oxide goethite was the most effective catalyst for degrading the reductant probe hexachloroethane. Several fractions of a natural soil were used to confirm the catalytic behavior of synthetic minerals. Natural soil fractions did not effectively catalyze the generation of hydroxyl radicals or reductants. However, soil organic matter was found to promote reductant generation at high pH. The results of this research demonstrate that synthetic iron and manganese oxides can activate persulfate to generate reductants and oxidants, however, iron and manganese oxides

Effect and mechanism of persulfate activated by different methods for PAHs removal in soil.

The influence of persulfate activation methods on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) degradation was investigated and included thermal, citrate chelated iron, and alkaline, and a hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)-persulfate binary mixture. Thermal activation (60 °C) resulted in the highest removal of PAHs (99.1%) and persulfate consumption during thermal activation varied (0.45-1.38 g/kg soil). Per...

Persulfate Oxidation for the Remediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils

The feasibility of total petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated (TPH) soil remediation was studied using persulfate oxidation. Factors tested included type of activator, persulfate concentration, number of persulfate applications, and reaction time. Probe chemicals were used to study effi ciency of the persulfate oxidation mechanism. The best activation method used Fe2+, which achieved 40.8% TPH de...

Effect of Persulfate Formulations on Soil Permeability

by MIAO YU, M.S. Washington State University August 2010 Chair: Richard J. Watts In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using persulfate is a promising technique for the remediation of soil and groundwater contaminants. Persulfate activated by iron (III)-EDTA or sodium hydroxide can accelerate the degradation of contaminants. However, in previous studies of ISCO remediation processes, the applicatio...

Remediation of Nitrobenzene Contaminated Soil by Combining Surfactant Enhanced Soil Washing and Effluent Oxidation with Persulfate

The combination of surfactant enhanced soil washing and degradation of nitrobenzene (NB) in effluent with persulfate was investigated to remediate NB contaminated soil. Aqueous solution of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS, 24.0 mmol L-1) was used at a given mass ratio of solution to soil (20:1) to extract NB contaminated soil (47.3 mg kg-1), resulting in NB desorption removal efficient of 7...

Laboratory and Modeling Efforts to Refine the use of In Situ Chemical Oxidation for Addressing Residual VOC Plumes on the Savannah River Site

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) has been widely used in recent years for the remediation of VOC contaminated soil and groundwater. Among several chemical oxidizing agents injected into the subsurface for ISCO, persulfate has often been selected due to the advantage of being less reactive and longer-lived in the subsurface environment. Through this research, the effect of side reactions occurr...
