Ac 2011-1909: Introducing K-12 Teachers to Lego Mindstorm Robotics through a Collaborative Online Professional Development Course
نویسنده
چکیده
In recent decades, engineering and robotics programs such as First Lego League (FLL) have allowed children ages 9 to 14 to deeply engage with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines and inspired them to explore careers in STEM fields. In 2009, NASA awarded Georgia Tech a contract to develop online professional development (PD) courses for STEM teachers. Electronic professional development (ePDN) courses are designed to model best practices in teacher PD by incorporating inquiry-based learning and by promoting the types of active interaction and reflection by participants that normally occur in effective face-toface professional development sessions. In this study, the collaborative online courses and their impact on teachers’ professional development are described. Additionally, a case study approach was employed to examine the effectiveness of online PD courses in classrooms and schools. Each teacher experience after completing the robotics course was presented as a case, and each case was used to explore the impact of robotics courses on teacher practices.

Teacher professional development, as a burgeoning term, has attracted a surge of interest in English language teaching. In second language (L2) professional development, the common orthodoxy has been one which considers teachers as that of knowledge consumers. It is commonly argued that top-down approaches to teachers’ professional development has done little to maximize teachers’ professionali...

LEGO robotics is not all that new to the classroom. Teachers have used the toolset to teach STEM subjects in exciting and hands-on ways. Sure students appear to be more engaged and appear to be learning, but how does such a curriculum impact students’ attitudes and knowledge? How do you design such a curriculum of robotics to also appeal to female students? These are questions this study attemp...
متن کاملUnderstanding CS Teachers’ Professional Identity
Currently, we are facing big challenges of preparing and supporting K-12 CS teachers. In addition to increasing the number of CS teachers, there is a great need of supporting those teachers to grow and retain as committed, quality teachers. As suggested by teacher identity theory, teachers’ sense of commitment and (other aspects of) teaching profession is tightly linked with their sense of iden...

Robots are often used to increase human productivity and decrease human error. It is a key to build a reliable and correct robot that does not contain bugs and errors and demonstrate fault behaviors. In this paper we design and develop an intelligent, multifunctional robot using object oriented software development (OOSD) approach a UML (Unified Modeling Language) based robotics architecture th...
