چکیده

This paper describes current rover field testing activities of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and presents results obtained to-date. These field tests were collaborative activities between JPL engineers and a team of scientists from several universities and NASA centers. The broad objective of these field tests is to simulate, as closely as possible, realistic mission scenarios for upcoming NASA Mars missions, evaluate existing technologies, and identify technologies that need to be developed. This paper describes the results obtained during the first such test, which took place in the Mojave Desert in December of 1996, and outlines plans for future tests.

The Rocky 7 rover: a Mars sciencecraft prototype

This paper describes the design and implementation at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of a small rover for future Mars missions requiring long traverses and rover-based science experiments. The small rover prototype, called Rocky 7, is capable of long traverses, autonomous navigation, and science instrument control. This rover carries three science instruments, and can be commanded from any compu...

Navigation Results from Desert Field Tests of the Rocky 7 Mars Rover

Upcoming missions to the surface of Mars will use mobile robots to traverse long distances from the landing site. To prepare for these missions, the prototype rover, Rocky 7, has been tested in desert field trials conducted with a team of planetary scientists. While several new capabilities have been demonstrated, foremost among these was sun-sensor-based traversal of natural terrain totaling a...

Autonomous Rover Reflectance Spectroscopy with Dozens of Targets

Future planetary rovers will travel autonomously over the visible horizon where data collection sequences cannot be scripted in advance. These rovers would benefit from an ability to autonomously identify science targets and deploy sensors. We present an automatic method for measuring rocks using a VIS/NIR reflectance spectrometer and solar illumination. Our approach leverages an automatic imag...
