چکیده
General comments: The authors test the impact of nutrient supply and nutrient stoichiometry on production, partitioning and elemental composition of phytoplanktonderived dissolved (DOC, DON, DOP) and particulate (POC, PON, POP) organic matter in shipboard mesocosm incubations conducted at three nutrient enrichment concentrations. They present clear observations of a decline in organic matter production of coastal phytoplankton as a result of decreasing N supply and flexibility in the stoichiometry of mineral nutrient consumption. Their results demonstrate how DIN and DIP are consumed over a large range of DIN:DIP. This paper addresses an important

Production, partitioning and stoichiometry of organic matter under variable nutrient supply during mesocosm experiments in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic Ocean
Oxygen-deficient waters in the ocean, generally referred to as oxygen minimum zones (OMZ), are expected to expand as a consequence of global climate change. Poor oxygenation is promoting microbial loss of inorganic nitrogen (N) and increasing release of sediment-bound phosphate (P) into the water column. These intermediate water masses, nutrient-loaded but with an N deficit relative to the cano...
متن کاملImplications of elevated CO 2 on pelagic carbon fluxes in an Arctic mesocosm study – an elemental mass balance approach
Recent studies on the impacts of ocean acidification on pelagic communities have identified changes in carbon to nutrient dynamics with related shifts in elemental stoichiometry. In principle, mesocosm experiments provide the opportunity of determining temporal dynamics of all relevant carbon and nutrient pools and, thus, calculating elemental budgets. In practice, attempts to budget mesocosm e...
متن کاملEffect of feeding rate on nutrient digestibility in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.
A digestibility trial was conducted to examine the effect of feeding rate on dry matter, gross energy, crude protein and phosphorus digestibility in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Duplicate groups of fish were fed 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 and 1.9% BW/day. The faeces were collected by Guelph-type collectors for five successive days. Dry matter, protein and phosphorus digestibility’s were all s...

High-latitude rivers supply the Arctic Ocean with a disproportionately large share of global riverine discharge and terrigenous dissolved organic matter (DOM). We used the abundance of lignin, a macromolecule unique to vascular plants, and stable carbon isotope ratios (d13C) to trace the high molecular weight fraction of terrigenous DOM in major water masses of the Arctic Ocean. Lignin oxidatio...

Surface waters of the subtropical Sargasso Sea contain dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) concentrations of 0.2 to 1.0 nanomolar, which are sufficiently low to result in phosphorus control of primary production. The DIP concentrations in this area (which receives high inputs of iron-rich dust from arid regions of North Africa) are one to two orders of magnitude lower than surface levels in the...
