چکیده

Limitations of modern artificial intelligence are most evident in comparison with the human ability to selfregulate cognitive and learning processes. Is it possible to model the human self-regulation ability in artifacts? And vice versa, can a computer model of this sort help students to develop self-regulation skills? This work describes a blueprint of an innovative intelligent tutoring system called Cognitive Constructor, to be used as a self-regulatedlearning assistant to students in mathematical problem solving paradigms. Cognitive Constructor will enable parallel acquisition of domain-specific mathematical skills and general self-regulated problem solving skills. At the core of Cognitive Constructor is our recently developed cognitive architecture GMU BICA that provides a suitable basis for modeling self-regulated problem solving.

The Constructor Metacognitive Architecture

A true human-level learner should be able to deliberately construct its own knowledge, its processes of reasoning resulting in a new knowledge, its system of values and goals, and the scenario of its cognitive growth. These capabilities require a cognitive architecture of a new kind that supports metacognition, self-awareness, and selfregulation. An example architecture design called Constructo...

Cognitive Constructor: An Intelligent Tutoring System Based on a Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architecture (BICA)

Significant progress can be made in the part of elementary school education that relies on intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), if the role of a referee and a peer advisor will be performed by a pedagogical agent that is a computer implementation of a cognitive architecture modeling the process of learning. Recent studies in cognitive architectures funded by the DARPA IPTO BICA Program have iden...

The Small Loop Problem: A Challenge for Artificial Emergent Cognition

We propose the Small Loop Problem as a challenge for biologically inspired cognitive architectures. This challenge consists of designing an agent that would autonomously organize its behavior through interaction with an initially unknown environment that offers basic sequential and spatial regularities. The Small Loop Problem demonstrates four principles that we consider crucial to the implemen...
