Model-Based Reproduction of Articulatory Trajectories for Consonant-Vowel Sequences
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a novel quantitative model for the generation of articulatory trajectories based on the concept of sequential target approximation. The model was applied for the detailed reproduction of movements in repeated consonant-vowel syllables measured by electromagnetic articulography (EMA). The trajectories for the constrictor (lower lip, tongue tip, or tongue dorsum) and the jaw were reproduced. Thereby, we tested the following hypotheses about invariant properties of articulatory commands: (a) The target of the primary articulator for a consonant is invariant with respect to phonetic context, stress and speaking rate. (b) Vowel targets are invariant with respect to speaking rate and stress. (c) The onsets of articulatory commands for the jaw and the constrictor are synchronized. Our results in terms of high-quality matches between observed and model-generated trajectories support these hypotheses. The findings of this study can be applied to the development of control models for articulatory speech synthesis. EDICS Category: SPE-SPRD

Articulatory synthesis and perception of plosive-vowel syllables with virtual consonant targets
Virtual articulatory targets are a concept to explain the different trajectories of primary and secondary articulators during consonant production, as well as the different places of the tongue-palate contact depending on the context vowel, for example in [igi] vs. [ugu]. The virtual targets for the tongue tip and the tongue body in apical and dorsal plosives are assumed to lie above the palate...
متن کاملAn adaptive neural control scheme for articulatory synthesis of CV sequences
Reproducing the smooth vocal tract trajectories is critical for high quality articulatory speech synthesis. This paper presents an adaptive neural control scheme based on fuzzy logic and neural networks. The control scheme estimates motor commands from trajectories of flesh-points on selected articulators. These motor commands are then used to reproduce the trajectories based on 2nd order dynam...
متن کاملThe Effect of Stress and Speech Rate on Vowel Coarticulation in Catalan Vowel-Consonant-Vowel Sequences.
PURPOSE The goal of this study was to ascertain the effect of changes in stress and speech rate on vowel coarticulation in vowel-consonant-vowel sequences. METHOD Data on second formant coarticulatory effects as a function of changing /i/ versus /a/ were collected for five Catalan speakers' productions of vowel-consonant-vowel sequences with the fixed vowels /i/ and /a/ and consonants: the ap...
متن کاملImprovement of a physiological articulatory model for synthesis of vowel sequences
A 3D physiological articulatory model has been constructed based on volumetric MRI data obtained from a male speaker. The model is driven by muscles according to a target-dependent activation pattern. In this study, we improved dynamic characteristics of the model to produce higher sound quality for vowel sequences. Dynamic characteristics of articulatory organs were investigated using X-ray mi...
متن کاملArticulatory distinctiveness of vowels and consonants: a data-driven approach.
PURPOSE To quantify the articulatory distinctiveness of 8 major English vowels and 11 English consonants based on tongue and lip movement time series data using a data-driven approach. METHOD Tongue and lip movements of 8 vowels and 11 consonants from 10 healthy talkers were collected. First, classification accuracies were obtained using 2 complementary approaches: (a) Procrustes analysis and...
