چکیده

Optical LEO downlinks from the Japanese OICETS to the optical ground station built by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) near Munich have been performed. This was the first optical LEO downlink on European grounds. The ground station received a 50-Mbit/s OOK signal at 847 nm on its 40-cm Cassegrain telescope and sent two spatially displaced beacon beams towards OICETS. Five out of eight trials could be performed successfully while the other three were hindered by cloud blockage. A BER of 10 has been reached. The elevation angle above the horizon ranged between 2° and 45°. The Fried parameter and the scintillation were measured with instruments inside the ground station. The beacon power received by the LUCE Terminal onboard OICETS has also been recorded. This paper describes the setup of the experiment and highlights the results of the measurement trials.

A Markov-Based Satellite-to-Ground Optical Channel Model and Its Effective Coding Scheme

SUMMARY We propose a novel channel model of satellite-to-ground optical transmission to achieve a global-scale high-capacity communication network. In addition, we compose an effective channel coding scheme based on low-density generator matrix (LDGM) code suitable for that channel. Because the first successful optical satellite communication demonstrations are quite recent, no practical channe...

Optical Free-Space Communications Downlinks from Stratospheric Platforms - Overview on STROPEX, the Optical Communications Experiment of CAPANINA

This paper describes the current (April 2005) status of the STRatospheric OPtical Downlink EXperiment (STROPEX) which is part of the European Union funded research project “CAPANINA” (Communications from Aerial Platform Networks delivering Broadband Communications for All). CAPANINA is one of Europe's initiatives to develop the promising technology of HAPs (High Altitude Platforms) which can on...

Trends in Laser Communications in Space Report on International Workshop “ GOLCE 2010 ”

In space, radio frequencies (RFs) are usually used for long-distance linkage. However, recent progress in optics and laser technologies, especially in fiber optics, is ushering in an era of inter-orbit communications using laser beams. Both RFs and optical waves are electromagnetic waves, but optical waves offer many advantages in space, including reduced mass, power, and volume of equipment, h...

Application of Single-Mode Fiber-Coupled Receivers in Optical Satellite to High-Altitude Platform Communications

In a free-space optical communication system employing fiber-optic components, the phasefront distortions induced by atmospheric turbulence limit the efficiency with which the laser beam is coupled into a single-mode fiber. We analyze different link scenarios including a geostationary (GEO) satellite, a high-altitude platform (HAP), and an optical ground station (OGS). Singlemode coupled optica...

An efficient utilization of intermittent surface-satellite optical links by using mass storage device embedded in satellites

Recently, earth observation system by using satellite network have attracted much attention due to their wide coverage and disaster resistance. Although the system is useful for collecting various data, which have an affect on a natural disaster, ecology and so forth, earth observation satellite hardly send the collected observation data to the ground station. This is because that the earth obs...
