X-ray spectral variability signatures of flares in BL Lac objects

چکیده
We are presenting a detailed parameter study of the time-dependent electron injection and kinematics and the self-consistent radiation transport in jets of intermediate and low-frequency peaked BL Lac objects. Using a time-dependent, combined synchrotron-self-Compton and external-Compton jet model, we study the influence of variations of several essential model parameters, such as the electron injection compactness, the relative contribution of synchrotron to external soft photons to the soft photon compactness, the electron-injection spectral index, and the details of the time profiles of the electron injection episodes giving rise to flaring activity. In the analysis of our results, we focus on the expected X-ray spectral variability signatures in a region of parameter space particularly well suited to reproduce the broadband spectral energy distributions of intermediate and low-frequency peaked BL Lac objects. We demonstrate that SSCand external-Compton dominated models for the γ-ray emission from blazars are producing significantly different signatures in the X-ray variability, in particular in the soft X-ray light curves and the spectral hysteresis at soft X-ray energies, which can be used as a powerful diagnostic to unveil the nature of the high-energy emission from BL Lac objects.

Intraday variability in X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects
We present a study of the intraday variability behaviour of two samples of X-ray selected BL Lac objects, the EMSS and EXOSAT samples consisting of 22 and 11 sources, respectively. In both samples we were able to detect intraday variability in less than 40% of the sources only. The duty cycle (the fraction of time, when a BL Lac object is variable) in X-ray selected BL Lac objects is 0.4 or les...

Context. We present the results of a set of observations of nine TeV detected BL Lac objects performed by the XRT and UVOT detectors on board the S wi f t satellite between March and December 2005. Aims. We are mainly interested in measuring the spectral parameters, and particularly the intrinsic curvature in the X-ray band. Methods. We perform X-ray spectral analysis of observed BL Lac TeV obj...

We present a new well defined sample of BL Lac objects selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). The sample consists of 39 objects with 35 forming a flux limited sample down to fX(0.5− 2.0 keV) = 8 · 10 ergs cm s, redshifts are known for 33 objects (and 31 of the complete sample). X-ray spectral properties were determined for each object individually with the RASS data. The luminosity func...

The BL Lac object 3C 66Awas observed in an extensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign (the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope [WEBT] campaign) from2003 July until 2004April. The spectral energy distribution (SED)wasmeasured over the entire electromagnetic spectrum, with flux measurements from radio to X-ray frequencies and upper limits in the very high energy (VHE) -ray regime. Here we use a time-...
