Torsion in the Matching Complex and Chessboard Complex

چکیده
Topological properties of the matching complex were first studied by Bouc in connection with Quillen complexes, and topological properties of the chessboard complex were first studied by Garst in connection with Tits coset complexes. Björner, Lovász, Vrécica and Živaljević established bounds on the connectivity of these complexes and conjectured that these bounds are sharp. In this paper we show that the conjecture is true by establishing the nonvanishing of integral homology in the degrees given by these bounds. Moreover, we show that for sufficiently large n, the bottom nonvanishing homology of the matching complex Mn is an elementary 3-group, improving a result of Bouc, and that the bottom nonvanishing homology of the chessboard complex Mn,n is a 3-group of exponent at most 9. When n ≡ 2 mod 3, the bottom nonvanishing homology of Mn,n is shown to be Z3. Our proofs rely on computer calculations, long exact sequences, representation theory, and tableau combinatorics.

Topology of Matching, Chessboard, and General Bounded Degree Graph Complexes
We survey results and techniques in the topological study of simplicial complexes of (di-, multi-, hyper-)graphs whose node degrees are bounded from above. These complexes have arisen is a variety of contexts in the literature. The most wellknown examples are the matching complex and the chessboard complex. The topics covered here include computation of Betti numbers, representations of the sym...
متن کاملThe clique operator on matching and chessboard graphs
Given positive integers m, n, we consider the graphs Gn and Gm,n whose simplicial complexes of complete subgraphs are the well-known matching complex Mn and chessboard complex Mm,n. Those are the matching and chessboard graphs. We determine which matching and chessboard graphs are clique-Helly. If the parameters are small enough, we show that these graphs (even if not clique-Helly) are homotopy...
متن کاملExtended Abstract HOMOLOGY OF MATCHING AND CHESSBOARD COMPLEXES
We study the topology of matching and chessboard complexes. Our main results are as follows. 1. We prove conjectures of A. Björner, L. Lovász, S. T. Vrećica, and R. T. Živaljević on the connectivity of these complexes. 2. We show that for almost all n, the first nontrivial homology group of the matching complex on n vertices has exponent three. 3. We prove similar but weaker results on the expo...
متن کاملSex-related Left Ventricle Rotational and Torsional Mechanics by Block Matching Algorithm
Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate how left ventricular twist and torsion are associated with sex between sex groups of the same age.Materials and Methods: In this analytical study, twenty one healthy subjects were scanned in left ventricle basal and apical short axis views to run the block matching algorithm; instantaneous changes in the base and apex rotation angel...
متن کاملFive-torsion in the homology of the matching complex on 14 vertices
J.L. Andersen proved that there is 5-torsion in the bottom nonvanishing homology group of the simplicial complex of graphs of degree at most two on seven vertices. We use this result to demonstrate that there is 5-torsion also in the bottom nonvanishing homology group of the matching complex M14 on 14 vertices. Combining our observation with results due to Bouc and to Shareshian and Wachs, we c...
