چکیده

This year marks the 100th year anniversary of when Nik olai Anichkov firs t used the rabbit model to show that the ingestion of dietary cholesterol alone is a primary cause of atheroscleros is. Since 1913 it has been demonstrated in thousa nds of animal experiments that the feeding of cholesterol, including in the form of fresh egg yolk accelerates the development of a theroscler osis in virtually every vertebrate species that has been sufficiently challenged. This includes ma mmalian, avia n and f ish speciesherbivores, omnivores a nd carnivores, a nd over one dozen different species of nonhuman prima tes.

Compared with saturated fatty acids, dietary monounsaturated fatty acids and carbohydrates increase atherosclerosis and VLDL cholesterol levels in LDL receptor-deficient, but not apolipoprotein E-deficient, mice.

Heart-healthy dietary recommendations include decreasing the intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA). However, the relative benefit of replacing SFA with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), or carbohydrates (CARB) is still being debated. We have used two mouse models of atherosclerosis, low density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (LDLRKO) and apolipoprotein E-de...

Flow-mediated dilatation is impaired by a high-saturated fat diet but not by a high-carbohydrate diet.

OBJECTIVE It is unknown whether a low-fat diet, which may elevate triglycerides and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, harms the endothelium. Our aim was to determine whether a low-fat, high-carbohydrate (CARB) diet impaired endothelial vasodilation compared with high saturated fat (SFA), monounsaturated fat (MUFA), or polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) diets. METHODS AND RESULTS Forty...

A Comparative Study between the Effects of Feed Inclusion with Garlic (Allium sativum), Cloves and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Rhizome Powder on Laying Hens’ Performance and Egg Quality

This experiment was conducted, during a seven-week period to investigate, the effects of using various levels of garlic cloves and turmeric rhizome powders, on laying hens’ performance, egg quality characteristics and cholesterol content in yolk. Two hundred and sixteen, 27-weeks old Novogen white laying hens were assigned randomly into nine treatments with eight replicates of three birds each....

The Use of Sweet Almond Meal as a Protein Source in Japanese Quails Diets

In the first experiment, the chemical composition, apparent metabolizable energy (AME), AME corrected for nitrogen (AMEn), true metabolizable energy (TME), TME corrected for nitrogen (TMEn) values of the sweet almond meal were determined in adult Leghorn cockerels. The second experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of different levels of sweet almond meal at 0, 100, 200 and 300 g/kg on...

Effect of dietary fatty acids on serum lipids and lipoproteins. A meta-analysis of 27 trials.

To calculate the effect of changes in carbohydrate and fatty acid intake on serum lipid and lipoprotein levels, we reviewed 27 controlled trials published between 1970 and 1991 that met specific inclusion criteria. These studies yielded 65 data points, which were analyzed by multiple regression analysis using isocaloric exchanges of saturated (sat), monounsaturated (mono), and polyunsaturated (...
