Identification of Photons in Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

چکیده
The possibility of discerning extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy (UHE) photons from those induced by hadrons is studied. Two effects characteristic only for UHE photons are taken into account: LPM effect and photon conversion/cascading in the geomagnetic field. First conclusions about the possibility of identification of photons in the UHE cosmic-ray spectrum are presented and the “primary photon hypothesis” for the Fly’s Eye 3.2·1020eV event is shortly discussed.

Sensitivity of the Auger Observatory to ultra high energy photon composition through inclined showers
We report a calculation of the expected rate of inclined air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays to be obtained by the Auger Southern Observatory assuming different mass compositions. We describe some features that can be used to distinguish photons at energies as high as 10 20 eV. The discrimination of photons at such energies will help to test some models of the origin of ultra-h...
متن کاملPropagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays
We briefly describe the energy loss processes of ultrahigh energy protons, heavier nuclei and gamma rays in interactions with the universal photon fields of the Universe. We then discuss the modification of the accelerated cosmic ray energy spectrum in propagation by the energy loss processes and the charged cosmic ray scattering in the extragalactic magnetic fields. The energy lost by the ultr...
متن کاملAnisotropy of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in the Halo Models
The harmonic analysis of anisotropy of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays is performed for the halo model. In this model the relic superheavy particles comprise the part of Dark Matter and are concentrated in the Galactic halo. The Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays are produced at the decays of these particles. Anisotropy is caused by asymmetric position of the Sun in the Galactic halo. The maximum anis...

متن کاملA search for correlations of TeV gamma rays with ultra-high-energy cosmic rays
A search was conducted for TeV -rays emitted from the direction of the ultra–high-energy cosmic ray detected by the Fly’s Eye experiment with energy E 3 1020 eV. No enhancement was found at a level of 10 10 cm 2 s 1 for E > 350 GeV. A steady source of ultra–high-energy cosmic ray protons or photons would be expected to produce a -ray flux above this level. An upper limit was also set for the fl...
