Pacific Equatorial Age Transect (PEAT): Summary

ثبت نشده
چکیده

As the largest ocean, the Pacific is intricately linked to major changes in the global climate system that took place during the Cenozoic. Throughout the Cenozoic the Pacific plate has had a northward component. Thus, the Pacific is unique, in that the thick sediment bulge of biogenic-rich deposits from the currently narrowly focused zone of equatorial upwelling is slowly moving away from the equator. Hence, older sections are not deeply buried and can be recovered by drilling. Previous ODP Legs 138 and 199 were designed as transects across the paleo-equator to study the changing patterns of sediment deposition across equatorial regions. As we have gained more information about the past movement of plates, and when in time “critical” climate events took place, we now propose to drill an age transect (“flow-line”) following the position of the paleoequator in the Pacific, targeting selected time slices of interest where calcareous sediments have been preserved best (Fig. 1).

The Inorganic Carbon System and Nutrient Cycling in the Equatorial North Pacific: A study of the interactions between oceanographic features and seawater chemistry

The world’s oceans are an extremely important component of the global carbon cycle. As anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions become a growing concern, increasing our understanding of the oceanic carbon system will be a key factor in projecting the affects of global climate change and the ability of the oceans to regulate increases in atmospheric CO2. Extensive progress in this area has been ma...

Ecohydrologically important subsurface structures in peatlands revealed by ground-penetrating radar and complex conductivity surveys

[1] The surface pattern of vegetation influences the composition and humification of peat laid down during the development of a bog, producing a subsurface hydrological structure that is expected to affect both the rate and pattern of water flow. Subsurface peat structures are routinely derived from the inspection of peat cores. However, logistical limits on the number of cores that can be coll...

Transformations of Mercury in the Marine Water Column

Methylation of mercury (Hg) in the marine water column has been hypothesized to serve as the primary source of the bioaccumulating chemical species monomethylmercury (MMHg) to marine food webs. Despite decades of research describing mercury methylation in anoxic sediments by anaerobic bacteria, mechanistic studies of water column methylation are severely limited. These essential studies have fa...

Ocean dynamics, not dust, have controlled equatorial Pacific productivity over the past 500,000 years.

Biological productivity in the equatorial Pacific is relatively high compared with other low-latitude regimes, especially east of the dateline, where divergence driven by the trade winds brings nutrient-rich waters of the Equatorial Undercurrent to the surface. The equatorial Pacific is one of the three principal high-nutrient low-chlorophyll ocean regimes where biological utilization of nitrat...
