Effect of Heat Stress on Amylase Activity in Chalky and Translucent Rice Genotypes

چکیده
Occurrence of chalkiness is a major problem as it is an important parameter in determining the quality of rice grains. High temperature during the grain filling period results in loose packing starch granules that could be due to the involvement of starch degrading enzymes i.e., amylases. Therefore, two rice genotypes viz., PAU 3699-13-2-1-1 and PR122 were sown at two different dates. Thirty-day-old seedlings of the two genotypes were transplanted in the field at two different times in order to expose the plants to different temperature regimes during grain filling. A Significant increase in total amylase activity was observed during early transplanting. The chalky genotypes i.e., PAU-3699-13-2-1-1 possessed higher α-amylase activity than translucent genotype (PR122) during heat stress. Whereas, PR122 possessed higher β amylase activity than PAU-3699-13-2-11. High temperature encountered during early transplanting resulted in induction of activities of amylases.

High Temperature-Induced Expression of Rice α-Amylases in Developing Endosperm Produces Chalky Grains
Global warming impairs grain filling in rice and reduces starch accumulation in the endosperm, leading to chalky-appearing grains, which damages their market value. We found previously that high temperature-induced expression of starch-lytic α-amylases during ripening is crucial for grain chalkiness. Because the rice genome carries at least eight functional α-amylase genes, identification of th...

This work compared the molecular structures and physicochemical properties of starches obtained from chalky and translucent kernels of six rice cultivars. Starch samples were prepared according to a modified alkali steeping method. Crystallinity, pasting characteristics, and thermal properties were studied by X-ray diffraction, rapid viscosity analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry, re...

To identify genotypes tolerant to drought stress in rice germplasm, a factorial pot experiment was carried out in the form of a completely randomized design with three replications and 70 rice genotypes originating from Central and West Asian countries in non-stress and drought-stress conditions at the Rice Research Institute of Iran, Rasht, north of Iran, in 2019. Based on the results of this ...
متن کاملDetection of QTLs for white-back and basal-white grains caused by high temperature during ripening period in japonica rice
There is increasing evidence that global warming affects the development of rice. High temperatures during ripening increase the ratio of undesirable chalky grains followed by deteriorating grain appearance quality. In order to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling the occurrence of white-back and basal-white chalky grains of brown rice, QTL analysis was performed using recombinant ...
