چکیده

M ycobacterium avium-intracellulare (MAI) sinusitis is rarely diagnosed. There are only nine previous cases documented in the literature, most of which are in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Awareness of MAI sinusitis may prove valuable to the practicing otolaryngologist, and an elevated index of suspicion is necessary in all immunocompromised patients with sinusitis, especially those refractory to medical management. Unless specific investigations for MAI are ordered, the diagnosis may be missed and complications may result. We present the first case report of MAI sinusitis in a diabetic or organ transplant patient and the first in a non–HIV-infected immunocompromised adult. We also present a discussion of MAI and a literature review of MAI sinusitis.

Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare is a rare cause of septic arthritis after intra-articular injection, though the causative role of injection is difficult to ascertain in such cases. CASE PRESENTATION A 57-year-old with rheumatoid arthritis treated with prednisone and azathioprine developed bilatera...

Palatal Actinomycosis and Kaposi Sarcoma in an HIV-Infected Subject with Disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare Infection

Actinomyces and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare are facultative intracellular organisms, members of the bacterial order actinomycetales. Although Actinomyces can behave as copathogen when anatomic barriers are compromised, its coinfection with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare has not previously been reported. We present the first reported case of palatal actinomycosis co-infection with dis...

Arylsulfatase activity for differentiating Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium intracellulare.

Arylsulfatase activities (96-h reaction) of various strains of Mycobacterium avium and M. intracellulare, as identified by a DNA probe test, were measured. The enzyme activities of M. avium strains were significantly lower [corrected] than those of M. intracellulare strains (P less than 0.005 to P less than 0.025). The enzyme activities did not vary with serovar; that is, the activities of sero...
