Immediate plasticity of identifiable synapses in the land snails Helix lucorum

چکیده
The data presented concern synaptic plasticity arising during neuronal response to a single sensory stimulus. The plasticity was studied in identifiable synapses between sensory and command neurones of Helix lucorum using simultaneous intracellular recording. A brief mechanosensory stimulation evoked a train of spikes in an identifiable visceral sensory neurone. Interspike intervals within the train changed from short (tens ms) to long (s). Each spike elicited an elementary EPSP in an identifiable command neurone. The amplitude of elementary EPSPs varied during a train of action potentials. Initial high frequency depression was followed by posttetanic potentiation and subsequent low frequency depression. The result of integration of the three pkastic processes has been named immediate plasticity. It has been shown that a compound EPSP elicited in a postsynaptic command neurone by a single sensory stimulus depends on the immediate plastic changes of elementary EPSPs.

Effects of anoxia on the extra- and intracellular acid-base status in the land snail helix lucorum (L.): lack of evidence for a relationship between pyruvate kinase down-regulation and acid-base status
The aims of the present study were to describe a possible correlation between the regulation of the key glycolytic enzyme pyruvate kinase and the acid-base status in the haemolymph and in several other tissues of land snails during anoxia. To illustrate whether such a relationship exists, we determined (i) the acid-base variables in the haemolymph and tissues of the land snail Helix lucorum, (i...

The effects of hypercapnia, together with low and high levels of extracellular Ca(2+), on heart activity and intracellular pH were examined in isolated perfused hearts from the land snail Helix lucorum. In addition, the intracellular level of Ca(2+) was determined in slices of ventricles superfused with both normal and hypercapnic salines, containing low and high concentrations of Ca(2+), to in...
متن کاملEffects of serotonin, dopamine and ergometrine on locomotion in the pulmonate mollusc Helix lucorum.
The terrestrial snail Helix lucorum crawls using waves of muscular contraction (pedal waves) that spread along the sole of its foot. Crawling speed depends on wave generation frequency (step frequency) and the distance the snail moves forwards during each wave (step length). In a previous study, video recordings of a crawling snail showed that its sole length varied over a wide range and was di...
متن کاملAdaptive Changes in the Vestibular System of Land Snail to a 30-Day Spaceflight and Readaptation on Return to Earth
The vestibular system receives a permanent influence from gravity and reflexively controls equilibrium. If we assume gravity has remained constant during the species' evolution, will its sensory system adapt to abrupt loss of that force? We address this question in the land snail Helix lucorum exposed to 30 days of near weightlessness aboard the Bion-M1 satellite, and studied geotactic behavior...
متن کاملFunctional Changes in the Snail Statocyst System Elicited by Microgravity
BACKGROUND The mollusk statocyst is a mechanosensing organ detecting the animal's orientation with respect to gravity. This system has clear similarities to its vertebrate counterparts: a weight-lending mass, an epithelial layer containing small supporting cells and the large sensory hair cells, and an output eliciting compensatory body reflexes to perturbations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING...
