چکیده

Many formal models for in nite-state concurrent systems are equivalent to special classes of rewrite systems. We classify these models by their expressiveness and de ne a hierarchy of classes of rewrite systems. We show that this hierarchy is strict with respect to bisimulation equivalence. The most general and most expressive class of systems in this hierarchy is called Process Rewrite Systems (PRS). They subsume Petri nets, PA-Processes and pushdown processes and are strictly more expressive than any of these. Intuitively, PRS can be seen as an extension of Petri nets by subroutines that can return a value to their caller. We show that the reachability problem is decidable for PRS. It is even decidable if there is a reachable state that satis es certain properties that can be encoded in a simple logic. Thus PRS are more expressive than Petri nets, but not Turing-powerful. 3 Standard LaTeX symbols are used (latexsym style). Boldface, italic and script type are used. 4

Reachability is Decidable for Ground AC Rewrite Systems

The reachability problem for ground associative-commutative (AC) rewrite systems is decidable. We show that ground AC rewrite systems are equivalent to Process Rewrite Systems (PRS) for which reach-ability is decidable 4]. However, the decidability proofs for PRS are cumbersome and thus we present a simpler and more readable proof in the framework of ground AC rewrite systems. Moreover, we show...

On Extensions of Process Rewrite Systems: Rewrite Systems with Weak Finite-State Unit

Various classes of infinite-state processes are often specified by rewrite systems. We extend Mayr’s Process Rewrite Systems (PRS) [13] by finite-state unit whose transition function satisfies some restrictions inspired by weak finite automata. We classify these models by their expressiveness and show how the hierarchy of new classes (w.r.t. bisimilarity) is related to both PRS hierarchy of May...

On Computing Reachability Sets of Process Rewrite Systems

We consider the problem of symbolic reachability analysis of a class of term rewrite systems called Process Rewrite Systems (PRS). A PRS can be seen as the union of two mutually interdependent sets of term rewrite rules: a prefix rewrite system (or, equivalently, a pushdown system), and a multiset rewrite system (or, equivalently, a Petri net). These systems are natural models for multithreaded...

Masaryk University Faculty of Science Constrained Rewrite Transition Systems

We extend broadly studied rewrite transition systems with the mechanism for computing with partial information in the form similar to the one used in concurrent constraint programming. Two new classes of transition systems (fcBPA and fcBPP) are introduced as this extension changes expressibility power of rewrite transition systems corresponding to BPA and BPP. The power of rewrite systems corre...

Using groups for investigating rewrite systems

We describe several technical tools that prove to be efficient for investigating the rewrite systems associated with a family of algebraic laws, and might be useful for more general rewrite systems. These tools consist in introducing a monoid of partial operators, listing the monoid relations expressing the possible local confluence of the rewrite system, then introducing the group presented by...
