چکیده

From 1997 to 2008 the treatment of more than 400 patients with C ions at the experimental heavy ion treatment facility at GSI has been successfully monitored in vivo and in situ by means of 3D in-beam PET. The promising clinical results of the ion therapy for static tumor entities encourages to apply it to more frequent ones like lung cancer. Due to the sensitivity of the ion range to density changes along the beam path and the complex active beam delivery for these intrafractional moving tumors it is desirable to have excellent quality assurance techniques like a timeresolved (4D) in-beam PET dose monitoring.

Investigation of tumor motion influence on applied dose distribution in conventional proton therapy vs. IMPT a 4D Monte Carlo simulation study

Background: in radiation treatment of moving targets located in thorax region of patient body, the delivered dose does not match with the planned treatment, resulting in some over and under dosage in the tumor volume, as a function of motion magnitude and frequency. Several efforts have been done to investigate the target motion effects on dose distribution in the target and surrounding normal ...

4D optimization of scanned ion beam tracking therapy for moving tumors.

Motion mitigation strategies are needed to fully realize the theoretical advantages of scanned ion beam therapy for patients with moving tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a new four-dimensional (4D) optimization approach for scanned-ion-beam tracking could reduce dose to avoidance volumes near a moving target while maintaining target dose coverage, compared to an existi...

4D in-beam PET of moving targets for different irradiation scenarios

Introduction Ion therapy allows a high precision, tumor conformal dose application but it is very sensitive to density changes along the beam path. Intra-fractional tumor motion due to respiration increases the risk of an incorrect irradiation and thus requires a reliable dosimetry as it was done by means of 3D in-beam PET for more than 400 patients at the experimental heavy ion treatment facil...

Designing a predictive guidance and control system for maneuverable ground moving target tracking in 3D space using a Hexarotor

In this paper, the continuity of tracking a ground moving target using a Hexarotor is considered in the presence of sudden changes in direction, deceptive movements, temporary departure from the field of view (FOV) and changes in the height of the target. In this regard, a hierarchical guidance and control system for target tracking problem in an unknown environment and disturbances is proposed...

Evaluation of the combined effects of target size, respiratory motion and background activity

Gated (4D) PET/CT has the potential to greatly improve the accuracy of radiotherapy at treatment sites where internal organ motion is significant. However, the best methodology for applying 4D-PET/CT to target definition is not currently well established. With the goal of better understanding how to best apply 4D information to radiotherapy, initial studies were performed to investigate the eff...
