چکیده
Analysis of both pulse timing and pulse shape variations of the isolated pulsar PSR B1828-11 shows highly correlated and strong Fourier power at periods ≃ 1000, 500, 250, and 167 d (Stairs et al. 2000). The only description based on a free precession of star’s rigid crust coupled to the magnetic dipole torque, explains the 500-component, as the fundamental Fourier frequency, with its harmonic 250-component (Link & Epstein 2001). In this paper, we show that if the dipole moment vector varies with time with a period nearly equal to the longest (probably fundamental) observed period (≃ 1000 d), the magnetic dipole torque may produce the all other harmonics. We find the second and fourth harmonics at periods ≃ 500 and 250 d are dominant for small wobble angle ≃ 3 and large field’s inclination angle & 89. Further, in a good agreement with data, we model the changes of the pulse shape in the precession cycle and find that the variation of pulse duration follows from a standard beam pattern in this cycle. We present a new phase-coherent timing analysis for the young, energetic pulsar PSR B0540−69 using 7.6 yr of data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. We measure the braking index, n = 2.140± 0.009, and discuss our measurement in the context of other discordant values reported in the literature. We present an improved source position from the phase-coherent timing of the pulsar, to our knowled...

We have carried out a survey for ‘giant pulses’ in 5 millisecond pulsars. We detect individual pulses from the high Ė pulsar PSR B1821−24 with energies exceeding 50× the mean pulse energy. These giant pulses are concentrated in a narrow phase window coincident with the power-law non-thermal pulse seen in hard X-rays. This is the third example of the giant pulse phenomenon. It supports the idea ...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Basic rotational and magnetic properties of neutron superfluids and proton superconductors in neutron stars are reviewed. The modes of precession of the neutron superfluid are discussed in detail. We emphasize that at finite temperature , pinning of superfluid vortices does not offer any constraint on the precession. Any pinning energies can be surmounted by t...
