The Ecological Significance of Sexual Reproduction by Tropical Green Algae
نویسنده
چکیده
The ability of scuba-equipped scientists to directly observe marine organisms in their natural environments has dramatically improved our understanding of marine ecological processes. Despite advances on numerous fronts, however, the basic ecology of many important groups, including the tropical green algae, remains relatively unstudied. This paper examines how aspects of sexual reproduction by these algae relate to their population dynamics and includes discussions of gamete formation, spatial dispersion of males and females, herbivory on fertile algae, the nature and timing of gamete release, fertilization success, and zygote dispersal. Further investigations into any of these topics promise to shed useful light on an ecologically important group of tropical seaweeds.

Induction of Gametogenesis in the Cnidarian Endosymbiosis Model Aiptasia sp.
Endosymbiosis is widespread among cnidarians and is of high ecological relevance. The tropical sea anemone Aiptasia sp. is a laboratory model system for endosymbiosis between reef-building corals and photosynthetic dinoflagellate algae of the genus Symbiodinium. Here we identify the key environmental cues to induce reproducible spawning in Aiptasia under controlled laboratory conditions. We fin...

The present study was aimed to identify thermophilic cyanobacterial of Chah-ahmad hot springs located in Hormozgan province. Sampling was done based on water resource condition, Water physicochemical analysis was performed due to their dramatic effects on species distribution. Thermophilic samples collected at different temperature gradients were fixed in 4% formaldehyde to minimize changes in ...
متن کاملThe Taxonomy and Biology of Phytophthora and Pythium
Members of the genera Phytophthora de Bary and Pythium Pringsheim are economically important “fungal-like-organisms” or “pseudofungi” which have been widely studied throughout the world but their taxonomic treatment has been highly controversial. The production of globose oogonia in the sexual reproduction has placed them in the phylum Oomycota. Although members of Oomycota are similar to all f...

متن کاملAsexual reproduction and molecular systematics of the sea anemone Anthopleura krebsi (Actiniaria: Actiniidae).
In this paper we use allozyme analyses to demonstrate that individuals in Anthopleura krebsi aggregates are monoclonal. Additionally, sympatric samples of the red and the green colour-morphs of A. krebsi from Pernambuco, Brazil were genetically compared and no significant differences were observed between them (gene identity = 0.992), indicating that they do not belong to different biological s...
