Anterior Resection Syndrome
نویسنده
چکیده
Low rectal tumors have increasingly been treated by sphincter-saving operations (SSO), but some patients with a low anterior resection (LAR) or a coloanal anastomosis (CAA), with or without (chemo)radiotherapy, may suffer from a defecation disorder called “anterior resection syndrome” (ARS). Frequent bowel action, urgency, symptoms of fecal incontinence, that characterize anterior resection syndrome, may occur in 10 to 20% of patients after sphinctersaving operations. Quality of life may thus be impaired but the outcome may still be preferable to life with a permanent abdominal stoma and the individual learns to live with the consequences of treatment. Therefore ARS must be considered a significant issue of rectal cancer surgery and colorectal surgeons should know about this syndrome from top to bottom: its pathophysiology, clinical events, diagnostic tools, and therapy.

Anastomotic leak management after a low anterior resection leading to recurrent abdominal compartment syndrome: a case report and review of the literature
INTRODUCTION Low anterior resection is usually the procedure of choice for rectal cancer, but a series of complications often accompany this procedure. This case report describes successful management of an intricate anastomotic leak after a low anterior resection. CASE PRESENTATION A 66-year-old Caucasian man was admitted to our hospital and diagnosed with a low rectal adenocarcinoma. He und...
متن کاملLow Anterior Resection Syndrome: Description, Measurement, Risk Factors
Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is increasingly recognized as a concern after low anterior resection for the treatment of rectal cancer. The lack of a precise definition outlining the symptoms and the time course that constitute LARS hinders ongoing research into the incidence, risk factors, pathophysiology, and treatment of this syndrome. This review will outline the current characteriz...
متن کاملAnterior Trans Cervicothoracic Approach for Complete Resection of Cervicothoracic Mediastinal Neurogenic Tumors
Introduction:Neurogenic mediastinal tumors comprise a wide range of benign and malignant diseases. A group of these tumors, located at thoracic apex, sometimes spread to cervical spaces causing numerous surgical difficulties. In thoracotomy approaches, due to proximity of the tumors to major blood vessels, complete removal of these tumors from cervical spaces is impossible or may cause intraope...
متن کاملManagement of anastomotic leak after low anterior resection with transanal endoscopic microsurgical (TEM) debridement and repair
Anastomotic leak after low anterior resection (LAR) in patients with rectal cancer who have received neoadjuvant chemoradiation can be challenging to treat and can lead to the creation of a permanent stoma. We report the case of a post-operative anastomotic leak after a Baker-type anastomosis during a low anterior resection was successfully managed with transanal endoscopic microsurgical (TEM) ...
متن کاملPelvic Floor Rehabilitation to Improve Functional Outcome After a Low Anterior Resection: A Systematic Review
PURPOSE Impaired functional outcome is common after a low anterior resection (LAR). Pelvic floor rehabilitation (PFR) might improve functional outcome after a LAR. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of PFR in improving functional outcome. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched using the terms fecal incontinence, colorectal neoplasm/surge...
