چکیده

We consider convex nonsmooth optimization problems whose objective function is known through a (fine) oracle together with some additional (cheap but poor) information – formalized as a second coarse oracle wih uncontrolled inexactness. It is the case when the objective function is itself the output of an optimization solver, using a branch-and-bound procedure, or decomposing the problem into parallel subproblems. Minimizing such objective function can be done by any bundle algorithm using only the (fine) oracle. In this paper, we propose a general scheme to incorporate the available coarse information into bundle-type methods in view of generating better iterates and then accelerating the algorithms. We study two pratical versions of the scheme: a (simple) inexact Kelley method, and a (sophisticated) level bundle method. We prove that these methods are convergent, and we present numerical illustrations showing they speed up resolution.

Uncontrolled inexact information within bundle methods

We consider convex nonsmooth optimization problems where additional information with uncontrolled accuracy is readily available. It is often the case when the objective function is itself the output of an optimization solver, as for large-scale energy optimization problems tackled by decomposition. In this paper, we study how to incorporate the uncontrolled linearizations into (proximal and lev...

Inexact Bundle Methods for Two-Stage Stochastic Programming

Stochastic programming problems arise in many practical situations. In general, the deterministic equivalents of these problems can be very large and may not be solvable directly by general-purpose optimization approaches. For the particular case of two-stage stochastic programs, we consider decomposition approaches akin to a regularized L-shaped method that can handle inexactness in the subpro...

A proximal bundle method for nonsmooth nonconvex functions with inexact information

For a class of nonconvex nonsmooth functions, we consider the problem of computing an approximate critical point, in the case when only inexact information about the function and subgradient values is available. We assume that the errors in function and subgradient evaluations are merely bounded, and in principle need not vanish in the limit. We examine the redistributed proximal bundle approac...

An inexact modified subgradient algorithm for nonconvex optimization

We propose and analyze an inexact version of the modified subgradient (MSG) algorithm, which we call the IMSG algorithm, for nonsmooth and nonconvex optimization over a compact set. We prove that under an approximate, i.e. inexact, minimization of the sharp augmented Lagrangian, the main convergence properties of the MSG algorithm are preserved for the IMSG algorithm. Inexact minimization may a...

A globally and R-linearly convergent hybrid HS and PRP method and its inexact version with applications

A hybrid HS and PRP type conjugate gradient method for smooth optimization is presented, which reduces to the classical RPR or HS method if exact linear search is used and converges globally and R-linearly for nonconvex functions with an inexact backtracking line search under standard assumption. An inexact version of the proposed method which admits possible approximate gradient or/and approxi...
