TPI test in treated syphilis.

چکیده
The Treponema pallidum immobilization (TPI) test has received wide attention as a diagnostic test for syphilis, but few studies have appeared on the response of this test to adequate treatment for syphilis. The Blue Star study of the Public Health Service (Bauer, 1951 ; Shafer, Usilton, and Price, 1954) offered a group of patients who had had bonafide syphilis, who had been adequately treated, and who had been closely observed for many years after treatment. The purpose of the present study is to determine the TPI results in these patients and to compare them with results of the VDRL slide and Kahn quantitative tests. When the Blue Star study patients were seen for their latest evaluation (5 to 9 years after treatment) blood was drawn and sent to the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory for the performance of the TPI, VDRL slide, and Kahn quantitative tests. During the early years of the Blue Star study, which was initiated in 1945, patients with any syphilitic diagnosis were accepted for study. As the study progressed and it was found that patients with secondary syphilis were the most satisfactory group for evaluating schedules of treatment, selections were limited to this stage. Therefore, of the 366 Blue Star patients who had TPI tests as of August, 1955, 213 were in the secondary stage at time of original treatment, 91 in the primary, 36 in the early latent stage, and only 22 in the late stages (twelve were diagnosed as having late latent syphilis, and ten as having symptomatic or asymptomatic neurosyphilis). In four patients treated before admission to the Blue Star study, the diagnosis at time of first treatment is unknown. As shown in Table I (opposite), 305 of the patients received only one course of treatment. The remaining 61 patients were treated two or more times, some for relapse or resistance, others for re-infection. No

Three Cases of Possible Late Syphilis with Negative Treponema Immobilization Test.
Although the treponema immobilization test (TPI) is often an essential requirement in reaching a diagnosis, and as soon as facilities permit should be done in every case of syphilis, it is not inviolable. It would be wrong, for example, to delay treatment in an otherwise undoubted case of syphilitic optic atrophy or general paralysis of the insane simply to await the results of this test. Equal...
متن کاملComparison of the VDRL slide, TPI, and FTA-ABS tests in experimental syphilis in rabbits.
The first serological test for syphilis, developed by Wassermann, Neisser, and Bruck (1906), was a complement-fixation test for reagin activity. Many tests for reagin activity have been developed since then, including the Kline, Kahn, Hinton, Kolmer, Mazzini, and VDRL slide tests. However, none of these is absolutely specific for syphilis. The VDRL slide test (Harris, Rosenberg, and Riedel, 194...

The Treponema pallidum haemagglutination (TPHA) test, the latest to be developed in the group of specific tests for syphilis, has been described by Tomizawa and Kasamatsu (1966), Rathlev (1967), Tomizawa, Kasamatsu, and Yamaya (1969), and Tringali (1970.) An automated microhaemagglutination technique, the AMHA-Tp test, has been evaluated by Cox, Logan, and Norins (1969) and Logan and Cox (1970)...
متن کاملThe Treponema pallidum haemagglutination (TPHA) test in biological false positive and leprosy sera.
The Treponema pallidum haemagglutination (TPHA) test was carried out on 274 sera known to show biological false positive reactions to reagin tests for syphilis. The Treponema pallidum immunization (TPI) and fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) tests were non-reactive on all these sera. Thirty-one or 11.3% showed reactive results in the TPHA test. Sera from 267 people who had lep...
متن کاملFluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test in yaws.
The pathogenic treponemes, T. pertenue and T. pallidum, produce similar antibodies in the serum of a person infected with either organism. Thus sera from patients with yaws react similarly to sera from syphilitic patients in the conventional tests for syphilis and in the Treponema pallidum immobilization (TPI) test. The most recent test developed for the detection of syphilis is the fluorescent...
