چکیده

In response to the recent biotechnology boom, many chemical engineering departments have recognized the need to incorporate biology, biochemistry, and bioprocessing into the undergraduate curriculum. Since curriculum changes can often be difficult to implement, departments must develop innovative problems, projects, and laboratory experiments illustrating bio-principles that can be incorporated into existing chemical engineering courses. The Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering has successfully implemented a bioprocessing experiment in the Unit Operations Laboratory. The key component to developing this experiment was utilizing a lab-scale fermentation unit to monitor and maintain system temperature, pH, agitation rate, and oxygen content. The goal of the lab was to utilize yeast to perform a glucose to ethanol fermentation. This paper will outline the methods used to develop the lab, the results obtained during the experiment, and provide information to other faculty regarding how to implement this experiment in their own chemical engineering lab.

A Box-Behnken experimental design for microwave assisted extraction optimization of pectin from citron peel

Microwave assisted extraction technique was employed to extract pectin from citron peel. Box-Behnken design was applied to investigate the influence of irradiation time, microwave power and pH on the yield and DE of pectin. The finding indicated that the optimal conditions for the maximum yield of pectin (30.71%) were achieved at irradiation time of 3 min, microwave power of 700 W and pH of 1.5...

Bioprocess microfluidics: applying microfluidic devices for bioprocessing

Scale-down approaches have long been applied in bioprocessing to resolve scale-up problems. Miniaturized bioreactors have thrived as a tool to obtain process relevant data during early-stage process development. Microfluidic devices are an attractive alternative in bioprocessing development due to the high degree of control over process variables afforded by the laminar flow, and the possibilit...

Rheological properties of probiotic non-fat yogurt containing Lactobacillus reuteri: Effects of inulin addition, inoculum level and fermentation temperature

The simultaneous effects of inulin addition (0-4%w/w), probiotic inoculum level (1-3%v/v) and fermentation temperature (37-45°C) on the dynamic rheological properties of probiotic non-fat yogurt were studied using response surface methodology. Frequency sweep tests were performed to measure structure strength and type of structure. Linear viscoelastic range in term of strain (LVE), structure st...

Bioreactor Design for Chemical Engineers

Fermentation — the essence of bioprocessing — predates the discipline of chemical engineering by thousands of years. Ancient civilizations used bioprocessing to create such useful and tasty items as beer, wine, sauerkraut, kim-chi, and cheese. Until the discovery of penicillin and its commercialization in 1943, bioprocessing was not performed on an industrial scale with equipment resembling tha...

Incorporating Experimental Design into the Unit Operations Laboratory

© Copyright ChE Division of ASEE 2003 Typically, the unit operations laboratory is one of the least-liked classes in the chemical engineering curriculum at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Unfortunately, many students view laboratory experiments as unfocused and haphazard investigations of various types of equipment that provide mere busy-work during their demanding course load. Although th...
