چکیده

[1] Mangrove forests are highly productive but globally threatened coastal ecosystems, whose role in the carbon budget of the coastal zone has long been debated. Here we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the available data on carbon fluxes in mangrove ecosystems. A reassessment of global mangrove primary production from the literature results in a conservative estimate of 218 ± 72 Tg C a . When using the best available estimates of various carbon sinks (organic carbon export, sediment burial, and mineralization), it appears that >50% of the carbon fixed by mangrove vegetation is unaccounted for. This unaccounted carbon sink is conservatively estimated at 112 ± 85 Tg C a , equivalent in magnitude to 30–40% of the global riverine organic carbon input to the coastal zone. Our analysis suggests that mineralization is severely underestimated, and that the majority of carbon export from mangroves to adjacent waters occurs as dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). CO2 efflux from sediments and creek waters and tidal export of DIC appear to be the major sinks. These processes are quantitatively comparable in magnitude to the unaccounted carbon sink in current budgets, but are not yet adequately constrained with the limited published data available so far.

Uncertain sinks in the shrubs.

alancing the global carbon budget just got more difficult. For decades, there has been debate over what happens to the carbon dioxide released from the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of tropical rainforests. About half of it accumulates in the atmosphere 1,2 , prompting concerns about global warming. The ocean and land take up the rest, acting as carbon sinks, and understanding where and ...

The Role of Ocean Carbon Transport in the Global Carbon Cycle

This issue addresses the present-day budget for anthropogenic CO 2 , and particularly the distribution and controlling factors of net terrestrial sinks for atmospheric CO 2 . The latter are of increasing political and economic importance under international CO2 mitigation agreements. Inverse modelling of meridional and zonal atmospheric, data(e.g. CO 2 , O 2, C), is one way to constrain terrest...

Profiling tropospheric CO2 using Aura TES and TCCON instruments

Monitoring the global distribution and long-term variations of CO2 sources and sinks is required for characterizing the global carbon budget. Total column measurements are useful for estimating regional-scale fluxes; however, model transport remains a significant error source, particularly for quantifying local sources and sinks. To improve the capability of estimating regional fluxes, we estim...

Scaling net ecosystem production and net biome production over a heterogeneous region in the western United States

Bottom-up scaling of net ecosystem production (NEP) and net biome production (NBP) was used to generate a carbon budget for a large heterogeneous region (the state of Oregon, 2.5×105 km2) in the western United States. Landsat resolution (30 m) remote sensing provided the basis for mapping land cover and disturbance history, thus allowing us to account for all major fire and logging events over ...

Global carbon sequestration in tidal, saline wetland soils

[1] Wetlands represent the largest component of the terrestrial biological carbon pool and thus play an important role in global carbon cycles. Most global carbon budgets, however, have focused on dry land ecosystems that extend over large areas and have not accounted for the many small, scattered carbon-storing ecosystems such as tidal saline wetlands. We compiled data for 154 sites in mangrov...
