Electrodiagnostic evaluation of myopathies.

چکیده
Electrodiagnostic studies play an important role in the evaluation of patients suspected of having a myopathic disorder. They are used to exclude alternative diagnoses, confirm the presence of muscle disease, narrow down the differential, and identify an appropriate biopsy site. The most informative part of the electrodiagnostic study is needle electromyography. This allows for the analysis of spontaneous activity and motor unit action potential morphology and recruitment patterns. This article proposes a practical electrodiagnostic approach and describes the electrophysiologic patterns of the most commonly encountered myopathies.

Muscle disorders are a common cause of disability in horses. For many years, clinical manifestations such as muscle pain, exercise intolerance, weakness, and stiffness were believed to be caused by a single syndrome. However, in the past years a broad spectrum of muscle disorders have been recognized including glycogen and polysaccharide storage myopathies, malignant hyperthermia, mitochondrial...
متن کاملAAEM position statements. Billing for same day evaluation and management and electrodiagnostic testing.
The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) is concerned about an emerging pattern among some payors to deny reimbursement of evaluation and management (E/M) codes to physicians who also bill an electrodiagnostic medicine code (e.g., 95886, 95900) on the same day. This practice is not appropriate. There are many patient-physician interactions that clearly requ...
متن کاملElectrodiagnostic Evaluation of cervical root involvement among patients presenting with radicular pain: Short Communication
Cervical spine pain is one of the most common problems of the spine and upper limbs, which can be axial or radicular. The present study aimed to electrodiagnostically evaluate cervical root involvement among patients presenting with radicular pain. The population was selected using simple random sampling from patients complaining of cervical radicular pain and unilateral or bilateral upper ext...
متن کاملProgression of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome According to Electrodiagnostic Testing in Nonoperatively Treated Patients
Background: This study tested the null hypothesis that nonoperatively treated patients would not show disease progression of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) over time according to median nerve distal motor latency (DML) on two electrodiagnostic tests. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed sixty-two adult nonoperatively treated patients who were diagnosed with CTS confirmed by a minimum of...
متن کاملThe value added by electrodiagnostic testing in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.
BACKGROUND There is no clear-cut consensus on the best diagnostic criteria for carpal tunnel syndrome. The objective of this study was to compare the probability of carpal tunnel syndrome being present following electrodiagnostic testing with the probability of it being present after the diagnosis was established on the basis of a clinical evaluation alone. METHODS The study sample included p...
