Communication and Miscommunication of Public-Health Risks: Towards Good Practice for Medical Journalism

Volume 2 • Issue 6 • 1000e121 J Mass Commun Journalism ISSN: 2165-7912 JMCJ, an open access journal Risk communication is the final part of a process which leads the decision-maker to determine whether a particular risk is acceptable or not and to adopt preventive behaviors [1]. Along this process massmedia play a crucial role in shaping citizens’ opinions and attitudes. When reporting public health risks (such as foodborne diseases, influenza, anthropozoonosis,...) to the general reader, mass-media try to translate expert knowledge in a clear and understandable way. In general, a proper communication of health-related issues requires a careful verification of the source, a detailed and complete report of facts and a clear presentation of different interpretations of facts.
