A new directive to all Catholic institutions within the Ft. W ayne-South Bend diocese may affect the future o f Mardi Gras at N otre Dame, according to Student Activities Director James M cDonnell. Bishop William McManus in itiated the directive, which pro hibits gambling for charitable causes. According to M cDonnell, the directive results from an incident that took place in Ft. W ayne last year. “Last year, a Catholic parish in Ft. W ayne held a fund-raiser,” M cDonnell said. “A Ft. W ayne newspaper photographed the gambling that took place at the fundraiser and published an article which questioned whether the charitable end was justified by means o f gambling. “As a result o f this article, Bishop McManus initiated a new directive to all Catholic institu tions and organizations within the diocese.
