Olfactory Axons: A Remarkable Convergence
نویسندگان
چکیده
Thousands of neurons expressing a given mouse odorant receptor project to a few glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. New observations on mice expressing small odorant receptor transgenes provide support for the idea that interdependence is involved in the maturation of this remarkable convergence.

Sorting and convergence of primary olfactory axons are independent of the olfactory bulb.
Primary olfactory axons expressing the same odorant receptor gene sort out and converge to fixed sites in the olfactory bulb. We examined the guidance of axons expressing the P2 odorant receptor when they were challenged with different cellular environments in vivo. In the mutant extratoes mouse, the olfactory bulb is lacking and is replaced by a fibrocellular mass. In these animals, primary ol...

The convergence of olfactory sensory axons that express the same receptor onto specific glomeruli is a common organizing principle in animal olfactory systems. In this issue of Neuron, two beautiful studies in Drosophila by Lattemann et al. and Sweeney et al. show that Semaphorin repulsion regulates interactions between olfactory receptor neurons to help axons find their correct targets.

A remarkable feature of peripheral olfactory projections in mammals is the convergence of axons from olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) expressing the same odorant receptor (OR) into the same glomeruli. There is mounting evidence that the ORs play critical roles in glomerular formation. However, it remains unclear how the OR exerts its function of sorting axons into homogeneity. We and others hav...

Olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) are individually specified to express one odorant receptor (OR) gene among approximately 1000 different and project with precision to topographically defined convergence sites, the glomeruli, in the olfactory bulb. Although ORs partially determine the location of convergence sites, the mechanism ensuring that axons with different OR identities do not co-converge...

Odorants are detected by olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) located in the olfactory epithelium. In mice, ORNs expressing the same odorant receptor (OR) project to a single glomerulus out of 1800 in the olfactory bulb (OB). It has been proposed that OR-derived cAMP signals guide ORN axons to their glomeruli rather than OR themselves. Recently, it has also been shown that the axon guidance molecu...
