Screening of new yam clones (D. alata and D. rotundata) in nematode prone ecology of guinea savanna zone in West Africa

چکیده
Objectives: The main objective of this study was to identify some yam assessions that are tolerant to the most invasive nematodes like Scutellonema bradys and Meloidogyne spp. Methodology and results: New assessions of Dioscorea spp. were screened in the savanna zone of central Côte d’Ivoire. Fourteen of D. alata and thirty seven assessions of D. rotundata were tested respectively and separately against two and four local yam varieties in an augmented design from 2000 to 2001. Nine varieties of D. rotundata were more resistant to S. bradys and Meloidogyne when D. alata were less tolerant. The effect of S. bradys on D. alata was higher in 2001 compared to 2000. The effect of Meloidogyne was significantly (P<0.001) depressive on the production of D. rotundata every year while they were tolerant to S. bradys. Conclusion and application: Identified assessions among D. rotundata can be considered as promising varieties in nematode prone ecology. These varieties are 95/01864, 89/02665, 85/01864, 96/00480, 95/18937, 95/00902, BD10, 96/01524 and TDr608. More positive perspective can be achieved by crossing some clones of D. alata and these D. rotundata .

Identification of soil factors that relate to plant parasitic nematode communities on tomato and yam in the French West Indies
A soil and nematode survey of tomato and yam crops was made in Martinique (French West Indies). Each sample was divided into two parts, one for the nematode study and one for the soil analysis. The coupling of the data was made using the coinertia analysis. For tomato plants, which were grown from seeds, the nematode-soil relationships were very strong. For the two varieties of yams, Dioscorea ...

Yam is a major staple in West and Central Africa and an important supplementary food in East Africa. Three varieties of yam are grown in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), though only two are indigenous to the region. White yam (D. rotundata) and yellow yam (D. cayenensis) are native to West Africa, and the production area stretches from central Cote d‘Ivoire to Cameroon. East African production of wate...
متن کاملHarnessing modern biotechnology for tropical tuber crop improvement: Yam (Dioscorea spp.) molecular breeding
Yams (Dioscorea spp.) constitute a staple food crop for over 100 million people in the humid and subhumid tropics. They are polyploid and vegetatively propagated. The Guinea yams, Dioscorea rotundata and D. cayenensis, are the most important yams in West and Central Africa where they are indigenous, while D. alata (referred to as water yam) is the most widely distributed species globally. The g...

To evaluate the genetic diversity and understand the evolution of Yam mosaic virus (YMV), a highly destructive pathogen of yam (Dioscorea sp.), sequencing was carried out of the C-terminal part of the replicase (NIb), the coat protein (CP) and the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of 27 YMV isolates collected from the three main cultivated species (Dioscorea alata, the complex Dioscorea cayenensi...
متن کاملImplications of organic management on yield, tuber quality and soil health in yams in the humid tropics
Global consciousness of food safety, health and environmental issues has stimulated interest in alternative agricultural systems like organic farming. Since information on organic farming of tuber crops is meagre, a field experiment was conducted in split plot design over a five-year period at Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, India. The aims were to evaluate the impact of organic, c...
