Kondo effects in magnetic molecules on metal surfaces

چکیده
The Kondo effect is one of the intriguing phenomena arising from the interaction between magnetic molecules and metal surfaces. The Kondo singlet state resulting from the Kondo effect changes the magnetic state and the conductivity drastically. Therefore, the Kondo effect is a fundamental problem to solve toward application of the magnetic molecules to electronic and/or spintronic devices. To elucidate several kinds of Kondo effects emerging in single molecules on metal surfaces, I have carried out theoretical studies by density functional theory (DFT) and numerical renormalization group (NRG) in collaboration with experimental groups. In this talk, I will introduce recent studies on two molecular systems; Fe-phthalocyanine (FePc) on Au(111), and Mn-phthalocyanine (MnPc) on Pb(111). In the first system, the scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) spectrum taken at the Fe atom in FePc adsorbed at ontop site of Au(111) shows characteristic peak structure. The DFT+NRG studies reveal that the peak structure is attributed to the Kondo effect arising from the combination of the spin and orbital degrees of freedom due to the orbital degeneracy in Fe d-orbitals in the ontop configuration [1]. Such characteristic enables the orbital-selective controlling of the Kondo effect [2]. In addition, we recently find that the competition between such multi-orbital Kondo effect and the spin-orbit interaction enables us to control the conductivity through the single molecule mechanical manipulation [3]. In the second system, the coupling between the Mn center and molecular ligand in combination with the interafacial charge transfer forms unique collective S=1 spin state. The Kondo screening of this collective spin state results in the spatially extended and underscreened Kondo state [4]. I thank Dr. N. Tsukahara, Prof. N. Takagi, Prof. M. Kawai, Dr. Y. Kim, Dr. Y. Two-dimensional metal-organic networks as templates for the self-assembly of atom and cluster arrays
This thesis presents a study of the use of two-dimensional metal-organic systems as templates for the organization of metal atoms and clusters on surfaces. We start with a systematic characterization of the metal-organic porous networks formed on Cu(111) by polyphenyl-dicarbonitrile molecules, and of the temperature dependence of the assembly process, leading to a variety of geometrical structu...
متن کاملHOW THE KONDO EFFECT CAN EXIST IN Gd INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS
Based on the crystal and magnetic structural properties of some Gd intermetallic compounds, it is shown that with increasing conduction electron concentration, Gd experiences electronic and magnetic instability, and that these behaviors point to the appearance of Kondo Lattice. We suggest that the conduction electrons have gained local character. It is shown that Kondo effect should be observed...
متن کاملKondo temperature of magnetic impurities at surfaces.
Based on the experimental observation that only the close vicinity of a magnetic impurity at metal surfaces determines its Kondo behavior, we introduce a simple model which explains the Kondo temperatures observed for cobalt adatoms at the (111) and (100) surfaces of Cu, Ag, and Au. Excellent agreement between the model and scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments is demonstrated. The Kondo ...
متن کاملKondo effect of molecular complexes at surfaces: ligand control of the local spin coupling.
The spin state of single magnetic atoms and molecules at surfaces is of fundamental interest and may play an important role in future atomic-scale technologies. We demonstrate the ability to tune the coupling between the spin of individual cobalt adatoms with their surroundings by controlled attachment of molecular ligands. The strength of the coupling is determined via the Kondo resonance by l...
متن کاملTwo-Orbital Kondo Screening in a Self-Assembled Metal-Organic Complex.
Iron atoms adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface and buried under polyphenyl dicarbonitrile molecules exhibit strongly spatial anisotropic Kondo features with directionally dependent Kondo temperatures and line shapes, as evidenced by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. First-principles calculations find nearly full polarization for the half-filled Fe 3dxz and 3dyz orbitals, which therefore can give rise ...
