چکیده

IN the past, the sporadic, unpredictable occurrence of cleft palate made the study of its embryological origins difficult. The discovery by Fraser et al. (1954) that large doses of cortisone injected into pregnant strain A/ Jax females would cause cleft palate in 100 per cent, of the offspring, provided a means for studying cleft palate in all stages of its development. Also, the lower incidence (17 per cent.) of this defect in strain C57BL after cortisone treatment supplied an additional tool for detecting differences between normal and abnormal palate development. Thus, a study of the embryology of cortisone-induced cleft palate was undertaken. However, to understand the abnormal it is usually necessary first to understand the normal. Since the literature on normal palate development was incomplete and controversial, this subject was re-examined and the results have been presented previously (Walker & Fraser, 1956). In summary, this study showed that the palatine shelves, which initially lie in a vertical plane lateral to the tongue, move into a horizontal plane extending across the tongue dorsally, where they meet in the midline and fuse. This movement is accomplished by a protrusion of the dorso-medial wall of each palatine shelf and a compensating regression of the ventral ridge, with the movement of shelf tissue and depression of the tongue being accomplished by some force within the shelves. It is recommended that the reader refer to Walker & Fraser (1956) before reading the following account of cleft palate.

Cleft palate induction in hamster fetuses by glucocorticoid hormones and their synthetic analogues.

The effect of prenatal administration of different doses of cortisone, corticosterone, dexamethasone, triamcinolone and prednisolone on the fetus and its palatal development was studied. All the glucocorticoids, except cortisone, produced cleft palate in the fetuses. Both the total frequency and morphologically different types of cleft palate were related to the dose of the teratogen. Triamcino...

Morphological and autoradiographic studies of cleft palate induced in rat embryos by maternal hypervitaminosis A.

IN the laboratory many teratogenic procedures have been found to produce cleft palate in conjunction with other congenital malformations (Kalter & Warkany, 1959), but only in embryos of cortisone treated mice has this malformation been reported to occur singly (Baxter & Fraser, 1950). However, a carefully controlled treatment with hypervitaminosis A can produce a high incidence of cleft palate ...

Allophenic mice in cleft-palate investigations.

T1Wh (Rb (5;19)1Wh), an albino strain of mice not previously used in the investigation of cleft palate (CP), is homozygous for a (5;19) Robertsonian translocation which provides conspicuous chromosomal markers. Preliminary studies in this laboratory revealed that CP is induced in all the offspring of T1Wh females treated with 2.5 mg of cortisone acetate on days 11-14 of pregnancy and that palat...

Prophylactic Effects of Levamisole and Vitamin E on Phenobarbital-induced Cleft Palate and Spina Bifida in Rat Embryos

There are many reports that show the teratogenic effects of phenobarbital can be decreased by stimulation of maternal immune system. Therefore, in this study, the prophylactic effects of levamisole and vitamin E on teratogenic effects of phenobarbital were compared. This study was performed on 20 pregnant rats that were divided into four groups. Control group received normal saline and test gro...
