Reversibility or Disagreement

چکیده
The phenomenon of disagreement has recently been brought into focus by the debate between contextualists and relativist invariantists about epistemic expressions such as ‘might’, ‘probably ’, indicative conditionals, and the deontic ‘ought’. Against the orthodox contextualist view, it has been argued that an invariantist account can better explain apparent disagreements across contexts by appeal to the incompatibility of the propositions expressed in those contexts. This paper introduces an important and underappreciated phenomenon associated with epistemic expressions — a phenomenon that we call reversibility. We argue that the invariantist account of disagreement is incompatible with reversibility, and we go on to show that reversible sentences cast doubt on the putative data about disagreement, even without assuming invariantism. Our argument therefore undermines much of the motivation for invariantism, and provides a new source for constraints on the proper explanation of purported data about disagreement.

On Losing Disagreements: Spencer’s Attitudinal Relativism
In ‘Reversibility or Disagreement’ (this journal), we posed a dilemma for invariantists about epistemic expressions—that is, for those who claim that expressions such as ‘might’ and ‘probably’ make a contextinvariant contribution to the truth conditions of the utterances to which they belong. The crux of our dilemma is simple: invariantists, we argued, cannot make sense of a phenomenon that we ...
متن کاملEthical Agreement and Disagreement about Obesity Prevention Policy in the United States
An active area of public health policy in the United States is policy meant to promote healthy eating, reduce overconsumption of food, and prevent overweight/obesity. Public discussion of such obesity prevention policies includes intense ethical disagreement. We suggest that some ethical disagreements about obesity prevention policies can be seen as rooted in a common concern with equality or w...
متن کاملP-93: Comparison of TRIS and TALP in Reversibility of The Goat Epididymal Sperm Motility Following Exposure to Different Sucrose Concentrations
Background: Nowadays, cryoprotectant-free vitrification of human sperm in large or small volumes facilitated storage and use of human sperm for long time. However, this procedure was not successful in farm animals. The main finding in the studies is higher sensitivity of these kinds of sperm to sucrose osmolarities. Preliminary studies showed a reversible effect of sucrose on goat epididymal sp...
متن کاملReversibility of a module with respect to the bifunctors Hom and Rej
Let $M_R$ be a non-zero module and ${mathcal F}: sigma[M_R]times sigma[M_R] rightarrow$ Mod-$Bbb{Z}$ a bifunctor. The $mathcal{F}$-reversibility of $M$ is defined by ${mathcal F}(X,Y)=0 Rightarrow {mathcal F}(Y,X)=0$ for all non-zero $X,Y$ in $sigma[M_R]$. Hom (resp. Rej)-reversibility of $M$ is characterized in different ways. Among other things, it is shown th...

The current study investigated the expression of disagreement by Iranian advanced English learners. The data for the study comprised the recorded discussions of 26 male and female interlocutors in three different settings: 1) language institute, 2) home environment, and 3) university setting. Analysis of the arguments pointed to the influence of c...
