Elliminating the Coriolis Effect in Liquid Mirrors
نویسنده
چکیده
If uncorrected, the Coriolis force due to the rotation of the Earth causes significant aberration of images produced by large liquid-mirror telescopes. We show that this problem can be eliminated by a fixed compensating tilt of the liquidmirror rotation axis. The required tilt angle, which is a function of latitude and mirror rotation rate, is of order 10 arcsec for current telescopes. This result removes the last fundamental obstacle to achieving diffraction-limited performance with large liquid mirrors. Subject headings: telescopes

A Sub-Optimal Look-Up Table Based on Fuzzy System to Enhance the Reliability of Coriolis Mass Flow Meter
Coriolis mass flow meters are one of the most accurate tools to measure the mass flow in the industry. However, two-phase mode (gas-liquid) may cause severe operating difficulties as well as decreasing certitude in measurement. This paper presents a method based on fuzzy systems to correct the error and improve the reliability of these sensors in the presence of two-phase model fluid. Definite ...

Objective: Surface coating of dental mirrors using nanotechnology has been done to render them self-cleaning properties. Nano-scaled titanium dioxide particles (TiO2)show antimicrobial properties when exposed to ultra-violet (UV) light. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface coating of dental mirrors with nano titanium dioxide on their self-cleaning (from dentists’ perspe...
متن کاملEffect of the Earth’s Coriolis force on the large-scale circulation of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
We present measurements of the large-scale circulation LSC of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in water-filled cylindrical samples of heights equal to their diameters. The orientation of the LSC had an irregular time dependence, but revealed a net azimuthal rotation with an average period of about 3 days for Rayleigh numbers R 1010. On average there was also a tendency for the LSC to be ali...
متن کاملAn in - Situ Verification Technology for Coriolis Flowmeters
Structural Integrity Meter Verification is a robust new Coriolis verification technology which uses the onboard electronics to very accurately measure the stiffness of the flowtubes. The flow tube stiffness is directly related to the flow calibration factor and is uninfluenced by process conditions. Meter Verification compares the measured stiffness to the factory baseline stiffness to confirm ...
متن کاملCharacteristic of P-type AlAs/GaAs Bragg Mirrors Grown by MBE on (100) and (311)A Oriented Substrates
P-type GaAs/AlAs distributed Bragg mirrors have been grown using molecular beam epitaxy on (100) and (311)A GaAs substrates in a similar conditions. A comparison of I-V measurements shows that the resistance of the ungraded mirrors grown on the (311)A substrate is 35 times lower than those grown on the (100) substrate with similar structure. The effective barrier heights for both (311 )A and (1...
