Small-signal Stability Analysis and Vsi Controller Design for Microgrids Operating in Grid-connected Mode

A novel approach for VSI with an LCL output filter controller design for microgrids operating in grid-connected mode is presented in this paper. The controller structure is based on a multiloop control configuration in which the inner control loop is responsible for current regulation and the outer control loop generates the reference currents based on preset active and reactive power injection levels. In order to evaluate the microgrid small-signal stability, a linearized model of the microgrid is used. The modeling approach adopted in this paper is intrinsically modular, in the sense that models for the system components are individually derived and then aggregated into a single microgrid model. The small-signal model includes the representation of fast dynamic phenomena that arise with the widespread use of electronically interfaced microsources typical of microgrid applications. Therefore, the dynamics of (i) Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs) and companion LCL output filters; (ii) VSI controllers; (iii) loads, and (iv) the electrical network, can all be taken into account. The small-signal stability analysis results are then validated through time-domain nonlinear simulations performed with the PSCAD/EMTDC software package. Resumo— Neste artigo é apresentada uma nova abordagem para o projeto de controladores de VSIs com filtro LCL de sáıda para aplicações em microrredes operando em modo interligado. A estrutura de controle utilizada baseia-se em uma configuração de controle multiloop na qual a malha de controle interna é responsável pelo controle de corrente do inversor enquanto a malha de controle externa é responsável pela geração das correntes de referência a partir de valores pré-definidos de injeção de potência ativa e reativa. Para avaliar a estabilidade a pequenas perturbações do sistema, um modelo linearizado da microrrede é utilizado. A técnica de modelagem utilizada nesse artigo é intrinsicamente modular de modo que cada componente é modelado individualmente e posteriormente agregados de forma a resultar em um único modelo dinâmico da microrrede. Esse modelo inclui a representação de alguns fenômenos dinâmicos rápidos que surgem com a utilização em larga escala de fontes conectadas à rede por meio de conversores baseados em eletrônica de potência, comuns em aplicações para microrredes. Dessa forma, o comportamento dinâmico dos (i) VSIs e seus respectivos filtros LCL de sáıda; dos (ii) controladores dos VSIs; das (iii) cargas e da (iv) rede elétrica pode ser considerado. Os resultados da análise de estabilidade a pequenas perturbações são validados por meio de simulações não lineares no domı́nio do tempo realizadas com o programa computacional PSCAD/EMTDC.
