چکیده

Abstract—I present several new relations between mutual information (MI) and statistical estimation error for a system that can be regarded simultaneously as a communication channel and as an estimator of an input parameter. I first derive a secondorder result between MI and Fisher information (FI) that is valid for sufficiently narrow priors, but arbitrary channels. A second relation furnishes a lower bound on the MI in terms of the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) on the Bayesian estimation of the input parameter from the channel output, one that is valid for arbitrary channels and priors. The existence of such a lower bound, while extending previous work relating the MI to the FI that is valid only in the asymptotic and high-SNR limits, elucidates further the fundamental connection between information and estimation theoretic measures of fidelity. The remaining relations I present are inequalities and correspondences among MI, FI, and MMSE in the presence of nuisance parameters.

We consider the problem of signal estimation (denoising) from a statistical mechanical perspective, using a relationship between the minimum mean square error (MMSE), of estimating a signal, and the mutual information between this signal and its noisy version. The paper consists of essentially two parts. In the first, we derive several statistical–mechanical relationships between a few importan...

Signal Estimation in Gaussian Noise: A Statistical Physics Perspective

We consider the problem of signal estimation from a statistical mechanical perspective, using a relationship between the minimum mean square error (MMSE), of estimating a signal, and the mutual information between this signal and its noisy version. We derive several statistical-mechanical relationships between a few important quantities in this problem area, such as the MMSE, the mutual informa...

Rate-Distortion Auto-Encoders

A rekindled the interest in auto-encoder algorithms has been spurred by recent work on deep learning. Current efforts have been directed towards effective training of auto-encoder architectures with a large number of coding units. Here, we propose a learning algorithm for auto-encoders based on a rate-distortion objective that minimizes the mutual information between the inputs and the outputs ...

Relations between Information and Estimation in the presence of Feedback

We discuss some of the recent literature on relations between information and estimation theoretic quantities. We begin by exploring the connections between mutual information and causal/non-causal, matched/mismatched estimation for the setting of a continuous source corrupted by white Gaussian noise. Relations involving causal estimation, in both matched and mismatched cases, and mutual inform...

A General Framework of Generating Estimation Functions for Computing the Mutual Information of Terms

Computing statistical dependence of terms in textual documents is a widely studied subject and a core problem in many areas of science. This study focuses on such a problem and explores the techniques of estimation using the expected mutual information measure. A general framework is established for tackling a variety of estimations: (i) general forms of estimation functions are introduced; (ii...
