Natural Language Edit Controls: Constrained Natural Language Devices in User Interfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
The development of natural language front-ends to applications traditionally requires robust lexicons and grammars containing both syntactic and semantic information to process users' queries. However, by developing an interface to a database in which natural language is combined with other input modalities, it is possible to simplify the natural language processing module. We introduce the concept of`natural language edit controls' (NLECs), discuss how to choose which tasks are appropriate for NLECs, and describe an interface that we have implemented which incorporates an NLEC. NLECs are special purpose devices for inputting part of a user's query in natural language which, when combined with other (graphic user interface) controls for inputting the remainder of the query, can be used to build the most eeective interface for a particular application. NLECs have more limited requirements for knowledge of grammar and lexicon than a traditional natural language interface, thus their associated customization and maintenance costs tend to be much lower.

In a future scenario where many devices can be controlled using the voice, easy and intuitive access and will be crucial for avoiding cognitive overload when faced with many different systems and interaction models. We propose a model for interaction with spoken language interfaces with heterogeneous tasks, based on the idea of using a family of life-like characters. The properties of these cha...
متن کاملNatural Language Database Interface for the Community Based Monitoring System
In most information systems, databases are accessed and manipulated typically through systems developed to tailor-fit the company’s needs. The usual problem in these cases is the limitation on data accessibility because the users are constrained to the forms created for the system. Another way of accessing the database is through Structured Query Language (SQL), a language that is not familiar ...
متن کاملA Method for Development of Dialogue Managers for Natural Language Interfaces
This paper describes a method for the development of dialogue managers for natural language interfaces. A dialogue manager is presented designed on the basis of both a theoretical investigation of models for dialogue management and an analysis of empirical material. It is argued that for natural language interfaces many of the human interaction phenomena accounted for in, for instance, plan-bas...
