چکیده

This paper addresses the issue of ISP motivation for multicast deployment. Our work is motivated by unicast applications such as on-line gaming and multimedia streaming that cannot leverage an existing multicast infrastructure and thus manage data distribution to multiple interested clients themselves. While such applications would greatly benefit from a multicast infrastructure, there is questionable economic benefit to an ISP for deploying multicast. In this paper, we propose a unique concept entitled stealth multicasting that allows an ISP to be the sole beneficiary of multicasting without awareness or modifications by the global Internet or end users. In the stealth multicast model, candidate packets are dynamically consolidated into virtual groups and transported across the initial ISP domain via multicast. Before leaving the domain, multicast packets are converted back to unicast, thus hiding the existence of multicast and avoiding modifications to end-user applications. We believe that such a scheme can indirectly accelerate multicast deployment for end users. In our paper, we show that the stealth multicast model can offer significant benefits to not only the ISP but also that our model allows for an economically viable transition to global multicast availability.

Stealth Multicast: A Novel Catalyst for Network-Level Multicast Deployment

While network-level multicast has tremendous potential for increasing the efficiency of group-oriented applications, the adoption of network-level multicast has been tepid at best. In this paper, we propose a novel concept entitled stealth multicast that allows for practical adoption of network-level multicast on a domain-wise basis rather than global scale. In the stealth multicast model, simi...

Wireless Stealth Multicast: Bandwidth Conservation for Last-Mile Wireless Clients

Rich multimedia places tremendous demands on wireless networks. Thus, it is important to use the limited bandwidth available to wireless networks as efficiently as possible. One method for efficient transfer of redundant data is multicast. Unfortunately, the use of multicast is limited due to the requirement for global deployment. Additionally, heterogeneous client speeds can further complicate...

HostCast: a new overlay multicasting protocol

Though the merits of IP-based multicast is undeniable, the deployment of IP multicast has met many difficulties. In the past several years, lots of research work have been done on overlay multicast (end-system multicast, application-layer multicast). In this paper, we propose a new overlay multicast protocol: HostCast. Besides constructing a data delivery tree, HostCast uses a simple and effici...

A Contemporary Study of Application Layer Multicast Protocols in aid of Effective Communication

IP multicasting, on par with unicast, is a powerful solution to one-to-many and many-to-many communication. The challenges faced while implementing it includes slow deployment due to the infrastructure changes needed and the address resolution problem. Hence this does not suit the current growing applications over the internet such as peer-topeer file sharing system, which requires multimedia d...

EBM: A New Approach for Scalable DiffServ Multicasting

The phenomenal growths of group communications and QoSaware applications over the Internet have respectively accelerated the development of two key technologies, namely, multicasting and Differentiated Services (DiffServ). Although both are complementary technologies, their integration is a non-trivial task due to architectural conflicts between them. In this paper, we propose a new approach, E...
