Recent advances in dedicated PET and SPECT instrumentation, disease-specifi c radioligands, and image analysis techniques contributed to the further development of this fi eld and its widespread application. In this chapter, we introduce the basis concepts of neuroreceptor imaging using typical radioligands, standard modeling and analysis techniques and discuss future research opportunities in the fi eld.

How have developments in molecular imaging techniques furthered schizophrenia research?

Molecular imaging techniques have led to significant advances in understanding the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and contributed to knowledge regarding potential mechanisms of action of the drugs used to treat this illness. The aim of this article is to provide a review of the major findings related to the application of molecular imaging techniques that have furthered schizophrenia research...

Omission of serial arterial blood sampling in neuroreceptor imaging with independent component analysis.

We have previously proposed a statistical method for extracting a plasma time-activity curve (pTAC) from dynamic PET images, named EPICA, for kinetic analysis of cerebral glucose metabolism. We assumed that the dynamic PET images consist of a blood-related component and a tissue-related component which are spatially independent in a statistical sense. The aim of this study is to investigate the...

Neuroreceptor SPECT Imaging Ligands

Neuroreceptor imaging is a promising area of brain imaging used to investigate various neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. In the research setting, radiopharmaceuticals targeted to specific areas of the brain are used along with SPECT to assess and analyze functional mechanisms within brain structures. Utilization of the data that are collected from these studies may aid in the de...

Neuroimaging in Parkinson’s Disease

Neuroimaging has provided insight into the pathophysiology and natural history of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and has emerged as a tool to monitor disease progression and to assess new potentially neuroprotective or neurorestorative therapies for PD. Diverse imaging methods have been successfully applied to neurological disorders. While technology like functional magnetic resonance imaging or magn...

An introduction to PET and SPECT neuroreceptor quantification models.

PET and SPECT using appropriate radioligands allow imaging of certain critical components of neurotransmission such as presynaptic transporters and postsynaptic receptors in living human brains. PET and SPECT data are commonly analyzed by applying tracer kinetic models. These modeling approaches assume a compartmental system and derive the outcome measure called the binding potential, which ref...
