Spring 2005 Prairie-Chicken Survey in Minnesota

چکیده
Greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) are a medium-sized grouse species (800–1000 g; 1.8–2.2 lbs). During spring they gather on communal breeding areas, or leks, where males display and compete for opportunities to mate. Prairie-chicken leks are also called booming grounds because males make a low-frequency, booming vocalization during their displays. Orange air sacs on the sides of a male’s neck inflate and amplify the booming sound. Pinnae, the long feathers on the sides of the neck, stand erect above the male prairie-chicken’s head during display (Schroeder and Robb 1993). Prairiechickens are also called pinnated grouse.

Prairie-chicken Survey in Minnesota during 2008 and 2009
Surveys for greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) were conducted (includes birds of unknown sex) and located 151 booming grounds. Within survey blocks we observed 0.32 (0.23–0.42) leks/mi 2 and 10.8 (9.6–12.1) males/lek. Approximately 19% fewer leks and 30% fewer males were counted in survey blocks during spring 2009 than during spring 2008. Averages of annual densities observe...

Surveys for greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) were conducted during April and May of 2010. We located 152 booming grounds where males gather for breeding displays, and we counted 1,499 male prairie-chickens, including birds of unknown sex.
متن کاملLekking and Nesting Response of the Greater Prairie-chicken to Burning of Tallgrass Prairie
In the southern Great Plains, the greater prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido) is confined to tallgrass prairie, a habitat now largely converted to agriculture. Remaining prairie is highly fragmented and subjected to land management practices that greatly alter the ecosystem of this species. Chief among these practices are deliberate, large-scale spring burns associated with early intensive sto...
متن کاملLocation and Success of Lesser Prairie-chicken Nests in Relation to Vegetation and Human Disturbance
Lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) populations have declined rangewide, and one of the principal causes is thought to be low nest success. Little is known about the relationship of vegetation structure and human intrusion to lesser prairie-chicken nest location and success. We conducted our study from 1997 to 2002 in southwestern Kansas, USA, on 2 sand-sagebrush (Artemisia fili...

Plague, a flea-transmitted infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, is a primary threat to the persistence of prairie dog populations (Cynomys spp.). We conducted a 3-yr survey (2004-2006) of fleas from Gunnison's prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) and their burrows in montane grasslands in Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico. Our objectives were to describe flea com...
