Thermal modeling of continental subduction and exhumation constrained by heat flow and seismicity in Taiwan
نویسنده
چکیده
The thermal evolution of crustal exhumation subsequent to the subduction of the continental margin is modeled through numerical solutions to the two-dimensional heat conduction equation. The boundary conditions used in the modeling are basically constrained by available geophysical and geological observations in the Taiwan area. Temperature distributions are calculated at one-million-year intervals over a 5 Ma duration. Although this study presents a tentative estimation based on some reasonable assumptions, the preliminary results not only explain the sharp change in seismicity within the crust but also agree with the general heat flow pattern on the surface of Taiwan. More specifically, both the high heat flow and the aseismic belt beneath the Eastern Central Range, which are probably attributed to higher temperatures within the crust, are modeled by crustal exhumation after the subduction of the continental margin. However, the occurrence of deeper earthquakes east of the Central Range is a result of the lower thermal gradient, which is due to the subduction of the cold continental crust into the uppermost mantle. In summary, preliminary thermal modeling supports the possibility of a tectonic model of active continental subduction and crustal exhumation for the Taiwan Orogen. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Active continental subduction and crustal exhumation: the Taiwan orogeny
It is generally accepted that continental subduction and crustal exhumation play an important role in the evolution of many orogenic belts. A variety of geological evidence suggests that continental crust is occasionally subducted to depths of tens to perhaps 150 km (e.g. Chopin, 1984; Dewey et al., 1993; Matte et al., 1997). Recently, a series of simulations (Chemenda, 1993; Chemenda et al., 1...

Arc continent collision is one of the most fundamental tectonic processes for the formation of new land, and the preservation on land of fragments of oceanic lithosphere (ophiolites). However, the tectonic evolution of arc continent collision is commonly over-simplified in everything from introductory textbooks to complex tectonic models. Major unresolved issues include the response of the fore...
متن کاملExhumation of high-pressure rocks driven by slab rollback
Rocks metamorphosed under high-pressure (HP) and ultra high-pressure (UHP) conditions in subduction zones come back to the surface relatively soon after their burial and at rates comparable to plate boundary velocities. In the Mediterranean realm, their occurrence in several belts related to a single subduction event shows that the burial-exhumation cycle is a recurrent transient process. Using...

Several lines of evidence suggest that simple subduction with one downgoing and one overriding plate is an insufficient model of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Instead, the subduction zone and arc are segmented, exhibiting variations in multiple characteristics along strike. One line of evidence comes from the analysis of seismicity. The subduction zone is atypical everywhere in that the Wadati-...

[1] A regional study starting from detailed geological mapping has been carried out in the Malpica‐Tui Complex of Galicia in NW Spain. The complex is formed by two units representing pieces of the external edge of Gondwana, subducted and exhumed during the Variscan collision. The study shows that synsubduction and early synexhumation structures in continental subduction channels tends to be obs...
