Voltage Sensing using MEMS Parallel-Plate Actuation

چکیده
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have been proposed as DC electrical metrology references. The design reported here is the first to enhance the qualities of a MEMS DC reference with potential tuning and sensing via an isolated and monolithically integrated MEMS technology and, thereby, convert a stable parallel-plate voltage reference to a simple, sensitive, low-burden voltage sensor. This on-chip system reliably measures unknown potentials ranging from -60 V to 60 V with sampling times less than 10 msec. In the initial design, the system is used to measure atto-amp leakage current though 10 P!, suspended, MEMS isolation.

The Effect of High Order Non-linearities on Sub-harmonic Excitation with Parallel Plate Capacitive Actuators
Electrostatic actuation of motion is commonly used in resonant MEMS. Drive signal feed-through is undesirable as it masks the detection signal. This paper reports analysis and demonstration of a resonant motion excitation scheme, which uses a combination of a DC bias with a sinusoidal AC voltage, frequency of which is twice of the mechanical resonant frequency. This configuration is experimenta...
متن کاملReduction of Electrostatic Control Voltage with a Tri - Electrode Actuator †
We present a new tri-electrode topology for reducing the control voltage for electrostatic actuators. Conventional parallel plate actuators are dual-electrode systems, formed by the MEMS structure and the drive electrode. By placing a perforated intermediate electrode between these elements, a tri-electrode configuration is formed. This topology enables a low voltage on the intermediate electro...
متن کاملDesign and simulation of a RF MEMS shunt capacitive switch with low actuation voltage, low loss and high isolation
According to contact type, RF MEMS switches are generally classified into two categories: Capacitive switches and Metal-to-Metal ones. The capacitive switches are capable to tolerate a higher frequency range and more power than M-to-M switches. This paper presents a cantilever shunt capacitive RF MEMS switch with characteristics such as low trigger voltage, high capacitive ratio, short switchin...
متن کاملEffect of Nonlinear Structural Stiffness on the Response of Capacitive MEMS Devices
The effect of flexibility and initial curvature of moving plates in parallel-plate MEMS capacitors are investigated. A parallel-plate-based MEMS tunable capacitor with extended tunability and linear capacitance-voltage (C-V) response is introduced. The design combines the flexibility and curvature of the electrode with an array of mechanical stoppers to increase the overall stiffness of the dev...
متن کاملModelling the electrostatic actuation of MEMS : state of the art 2005
Most of MEMS devices are actuated using electrostatic forces. Parallel or lateral plate actuators are the types commonly used. Nevertheless, electrostatic actuation has some limitations due to its non-linear nature. This work presents a methodic overview of the existing techniques applied to the Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) electrostatic actuation modeling and their implications to t...
