Validation of Water Vapour Profiles from GPS Radio Occultations in the Arctic

چکیده
The relevance of water vapour in atmospheric physics and climate research contrasts strongly with the availability of humidity data in the Arctic. The most extensive humidity data set is based on approx. 80 radiosonde stations north of 60°N, but suffers from two major problems: Sensor diversity and sensor limitations under Arctic conditions, on the one hand, and lacking radiosonde launch sites in the Arctic Ocean and the Greenland iceshield, on the other hand. Calibration free satellite borne instruments like the GPS receiver onboard CHAMP prevent from both handicaps. Comparisons between radiosonde data and GPS-based humidity profiles are presented for single occultations as well as averaged data from the proof-of-concept experiment GPS/MET and the recent CHAMP satellite mission. The effects of low absolute humidity and uncertain meteorological analyses are examined using additional information from a regional climate model. For the observations of CHAMP in summer 2001, a general dry bias has been found if compared with radiosonde data, apparent both in single and mean profile intercomparisons. In contrast, during February 1997 GPS/MET data show slightly higher humidity in the midtroposphere, if compared with model data and objective analyses.

Atmospheric Profiling in the Inter-Tropical Ocean Area Based on Neural Network Approach Using GPS Radio Occultations
In this study we have proposed a method based on neural networks to retrieve refractivity, temperature, pressure and humidity profiles by using FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC GPS radio occultation data. To overcome the constraint of an independent knowledge of one atmospheric parameter at each GPS occultation, we trained three neural networks with refractivity profiles as input computed from the geometrical...
متن کاملGNSS troposphere tomography based on two-step reconstructions using GPS observations and COSMIC profiles
Traditionally, balloon-based radiosonde soundings are used to study the spatial distribution of atmospheric water vapour. However, this approach cannot be frequently employed due to its high cost. In contrast, GPS tomography technique can obtain water vapour in a high temporal resolution. In the tomography technique, an iterative or non-iterative reconstruction algorithm is usually utilised to ...
متن کاملAtmospheric sounding by GNSS radio occultation: An analysis of the negative refractivity bias using CHAMP observations
Validation studies of current GPS radio occultation experiments using meteorological analyses consistently report on a negative refractivity bias in the lower troposphere. It is shown that refractivity profiles obtained from Doppler-inverted bending angle profiles not only deviate significantly within zones of multipath propagation but also depend on the selected end point of the occultation si...
متن کاملGlobal monitoring of tropospheric water vapor with GPS radio occultation aboard CHAMP
The paper deals with application of GPS radio occultation (RO) measurements aboard CHAMP for the retrieval of tropospheric water vapor profiles. The GPS RO technique provides a powerful tool for atmospheric sounding which requires no calibration, is not affected by clouds, aerosols or precipitation, and provides an almost uniform global coverage. We briefly overview data processing and retrieva...
متن کاملEstimates of the precision of GPS radio occultations from the COSMIC/FORMOSAT-3 mission
[1] The Constellation Observing System for Meteorology Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC)/Formosa Satellite 3 (FORMOSAT-3) is a six-satellite radio occultation mission that was launched in mid-April, 2006. The close proximity of the COSMIC satellites provides a unique opportunity to estimate the precision of the radio occultation remote sensing technique from closely collocated occultations (<10 k...
