چکیده

Land hermit crabs are common in many insular and coastal habitats in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide (Hartnoll, 1988; Greenaway, 2003). Some species, such as Coenobita clypeatus (Herbst), may be found many kilometres inland (Chace & Hobbs, 1969; DeWilde, 1973; NievesRivera & Williams, 2003). However, relatively few studies have addressed the densities of land hermit crabs, their ecological interactions with other types of organisms or, ultimately, the role land hermit crabs may play in food webs. Ontogeny of shell-related behaviors and transition to land in the terrestrial hermit crab Coenobita compressus

The marine megalopa of the terrestrial hermit crab Coenobita compressus wears a small gastropod shell that it carries onto land before metamorphosing into a juvenile crab. This paper gives the first detailed account of temporal shifts in shell-related behaviors that occur as the megalopa approaches metamorphosis. Megalopae placed in individual containers shortly after metamorphosing from the la...

Transition from sea to land: olfactory function and constraints in the terrestrial hermit crab Coenobita clypeatus

The ability to identify chemical cues in the environment is essential to most animals. Apart from marine larval stages, anomuran land hermit crabs (Coenobita) have evolved different degrees of terrestriality, and thus represent an excellent opportunity to investigate adaptations of the olfactory system needed for a successful transition from aquatic to terrestrial life. Although superb processi...

Shell Selection in the Hermit Crab Clibanarius signatus Heller, 1861 from the Larak Island in the Persian Gulf

Shell selection indices of the dominant hermit crab Clibanarius signatus Heller, 1861, in the Larak Island were studied from September 2011 to June 2012. Among 739 sampled specimens, 41 different gastropod shell types were selected as shelters based on their abundance and local availability. A significant positive correlation (P<0/01) was found between the dimensions of the hermit crab, Cli...

Terrestrial hermit crabs (Anomura: Coenobitidae) as taphonomic agents in circum-tropical coastal sites

Hermit crabs are ever alert for more suitable shells to inhabit, but what this may mean for coastal shell middens has rarely been considered. Here, the impact of the most landward-based of hermit crab families, the tropical Coenobitidae, upon archaeological shell-bearing deposits is assessed using a case study: the Neolithic Ugaga site from Fiji. At Ugaga, hermit crabs were found to have remove...

Behavioral evidence illuminating the visual abilities of the terrestrial Caribbean hermit crab Coenobita clypeatus.

Hermit crabs hide into shells when confronted with potential dangers, including images presented on a monitor. We do not know, however, what hermit crabs can see and how they perceive different objects. We examined the hiding response of the Caribbean hermit crab (Coenobita clypeatus) to various stimuli presented on a monitor in seven experiments to explore whether crabs could discriminate diff...
