That people were interested in the subject, the plight of the very young, unmarried mother, can hardly be denied?the National Council turned away half the people who applied and the hall was still bursting at the sides. The speakers were all people who, over the last 25 years, have each, in their own way, done much to salvage a lot of human unhappiness. Much of the work they do has started in the dark but, by degrees, patterns have emerged, signposts have appeared and a little more has been learnt to help the next unhappy girl. They have, for example, learnt that grief is more bearable than guilt, that you can take a girl to the clinic but you cannot make her use contraceptives, that for many girls the loneliness of rearing a child single-handed demands more strength than all but the very few possess and unfortunately the maternal instinct does not earn a salary, pay the rent and look after the baby. A little is coming to light about the needs of the putative fathers.
