Language Shapes Thought: Rethinking on Linguistic Relativity
نویسنده
چکیده
We reviewed the researches on linguistic relativity in color, space and time domains, and rethink the relationship between language and perception to support the idea that language interact with other cognitive processes and shape the perception and thought of human. Language, perception and action are not separated systems, but are closely interconnected and highly interacted to some extent. And language plays a constructive role in object affordances, which do not only require low-level processes of action and motor control, but depend on the language

Linguistic relativity.
The central question in research on linguistic relativity, or the Whorfian hypothesis, is whether people who speak different languages think differently. The recent resurgence of research on this question can be attributed, in part, to new insights about the ways in which language might impact thought. We identify seven categories of hypotheses about the possible effects of language on thought ...
متن کاملThrough the Window of Language: Assessing the Influence of Language Diversity on Thought
The way we understand language diversity, how languages differ in representing reality, affects our approach to understanding linguistic relativity, how that diversity affects thought. Historically, researchers divided over whether the diverse representations of reality across languages were natural or conventional, but all tacitly assumed an optimal fit between language and reality. Twentieth ...

There are several perspectives which have motivated the work. One of the most important is that of "linguistic relativity". This paper definitely falls in the tradition started by Herder (1772), continued by Humboldt (1836), Boas (1911), Sapir (1921), Whorf (1956), Weissgerber (1953), Kainz (1946), and Leise (1975), to mention only a few of the historically important contributors to the investi...
متن کاملLanguage and thought: Which side are you on, anyway
The debate over language and thought has traditionally been framed by two opposing stances: „universalist‟ and „relativist‟. The universalist view holds that language is shaped by universals of human cognition; on this view, languages make semantic distinctions drawn from a limited palette of universally available options – and when languages do differ semantically, those linguistic differences...
متن کاملLinguistic Relativity
The linguistic relativity hypothesis, the proposal that the particular language we speak influences the way we think about reality, forms one part of the broader question of how language influences thought. Despite long-standing historical interest in the hypothesis, there is relatively little empirical research directly addressing it. Existing empirical approaches are classified into three typ...
